Having worked in archives, I know that they are utterly magical places full of hidden treasures, precious memories, and poignant, tiny moments that tell us so much about our humanity. I’ve spent a lifetime living in the past, hunting through unusual objects, reels of film, letters, and documents that may have once been discarded, but form an essential part of microhistories that might otherwise be forgotten. That’s why I’ve written about the marginalised filmmakers of Northern Ireland – amateur and independent creatives who were shooting alternative images of a place whose conflict was seen all across the world, but whose daily life was not recorded in any meaningful way by broadcast cameras.

Jane Austen now dominates my teaching and research. This was not always so. I was trained in the writers that came before Austen and was happily teaching classes on them when someone at my university asked me to teach a class on Jane Austen. At first, I refused to switch. I countered, “She does not need yet another class.” But I agreed, and soon, I was hooked on her humor and her deft responses to those earlier writers. While the new graphic novel is my third book about Jane, I have not exhausted the things to research! The more I know, the more I admire her writings and her life.
I relish the intimacy of reading Austen’s private letters, and this is the best and most complete edition. Although her sister Cassandra notoriously burned many of her letters, the 160-or-so that survive offer plenty of unguarded moments to satisfy curiosity about her daily life.
In fact, I think Austen’s best lines are not from her novels but from her letters to Cassandra. My life is, in many ways, centered around bookstores. It all began at Three Lives & Co., a magical indie in the West Village of Manhattan. My girlfriend, now wife, worked there as a bookseller, and it was through her experience (and me hanging around the shop) that I developed an appreciation for how vital and wondrous bookstores can be. I was so enamored that I spent years researching the history of bookstores, visiting as many bookstores as I could, and talking to as many booksellers as possible. The result is my book.
I love this book because it captures the magic of bookstores.
