I love how Thomas Harris forces me to straddle the line between fascination and horror, then shoves me into Clarice Starling’s head for that heart-hammering showdown with Buffalo Bill.

Decades later, for me, no thriller matches its psychological intrigue. It’s a timeless classic that keeps my lights blazing and my imagination deliciously unsettled.

I enjoy mysteries that tie my brain in knots, and With A Vengeance had more twists than a pretzel.

Right from the start, the premise flips the genre on its head where the main character, Anna Matheson, who wishes everyone she has gathered together was dead, is also the one who must save them. I loved that Riley Sager set the entire locked-room mystery inside a moving train where every passenger is a suspect, yet somehow maybe none of them are guilty.

I spent the whole ride toggling between motives and alibis, sure I’d cracked it, only to be blindsided by another twist. Sager’s color-coded cast felt like walking Clue pieces, vivid enough that I swore I would find Mr. Plum in the Conservatory with the candlestick. But I certainly didn’t make the correct guess, and there’s nothing I love in a book more than a surprise ending!

Eriq La Salle is best known for his role as Dr. Peter Benton on the hit TV show ER, but Laws of Depravity shows that he’s a magnificent writer as well as a prolific actor.

I have read a lot of crime fiction, yet Laws of Depravity stopped me cold and made me question whether “the killing of devils is a condemnable act.” Growing up a preacher’s kid, I’m fascinated by the ways people use religion as an explanation or shield for both wonderful and terrible acts.

Lasalle doesn’t shy away from looking at the darker side, and that made me brave enough to take a closer look in my own work. La Salle has delivered a highly character-driven book that profiles the detectives and civilians as much as the killer while still maintaining that thrilling pace. This book had me hooked from the very beginning, it is exciting and shocking.

Many books can have slower chapters than others but there were no slow chapters in this book. The ending was not super predictable like some thriller books can be, and the characters were rich with great background stories.

I devoured this book and if you read one thriller book this year then make sure it is this one. The MC is a detective who is being taunted by a serial killer and the story felt current and not outdated. I am a fan of Criminal Minds and Psychology and if you are too then give this book a read.  

Amanda Kyle Williams quit school at sixteen, was diagnosed with dyslexia at twenty-two, and read her first book at twenty-three. She overcame addiction and wrote while working odd jobs, becoming a best-seller with her Keye Street series.

My wife heard Amanda speak at a dyslexia conference and told her about her husband who wanted to write books; later when I met Amanda at the Decatur Book Festival, she smiled and said, “Oh, yeah, you’re the writer.”

I love her protagonist Keye, a private investigator in Atlanta and former FBI profiler. She’s funny and gutsy and wrestles with her own demons. Don’t Talk to Strangers, the third in the series, is as good as the first two. Amanda died of cancer in 2018, but she left behind a tremendously inspiring legacy in both Keye and her own incredible story.

The biggest strength of this book is a large spoiler, which is a shame. I’d love to gush about it. You (should you choose to read it) get to learn about it as the work unfolds, though. For that, I’m jealous. Who doesn’t love to enjoy something so fun for the first time? The choice of victims and the reason for the kills makes the serial killer so compelling I rooted for the detective to always be one step behind. I loved him, don’t get me wrong. He is flawed and damaged, and I wanted him to succeed eventually. Thomas Holgate makes it easy to do that—want them both to “win”—as both have a point-of-view. The book was fun, interesting, and just a little brutal. 

This was my first, but not last, novel by Steven James.

The protagonist, Special Agent Patrick Bowers, goes to North Carolina to seek out and capture a serial killer who calls himself the Illusionist. I enjoyed the suspense factor from the very beginning, which kept me continuing from one chapter to the next. I was on the edge from the beginning to the last page and was pleased to know this was the first of several in the Patrick Bowers Files. 

The Jigsaw Man introduces us to DI Anjelica Henley and the Serial Crimes Unit as they investigate body parts found along the River Thames. Matheson pulls no punches with her portrait of her gritty East London, combined with pacey action and characters that quickly feel like old friends.

Book one in the Lacey Flint series, Now You See Me, got me hooked on the author and British mysteries. The writing style is evocative and deeply atmospheric, reminding me of gothic novels with a modern aspect.

I liked Lacey as a character, but what I found most compelling was the plot, which was a literary spider web. Although it was too graphic for my taste in places, the story was riveting enough to keep me engrossed until the very last page. I could barely keep track of all the twists and turns. By the time I finished reading, I had applauded the mind that could come up with such a complex story.
