100 Books Like Twists, Turns, & Curves

Humor is a gift, and Sarah Monzon does not disappoint. Nicole is a curvy girl who has the moxie to insist that her body isn’t the problem but more likely the clothing manufacturer. The main character, Nicole, is well-developed. The male heroine, Drew, pulled me into this story. He was flawed, which made him feel real—which was important because he is a dream with his positive attitude and quick wit. The chemistry between the two is full of sparks while remaining sweet and clean. This book upholds traditional Christian values.

Autumn Macarthur had me at Scotland. I love an opposites attract/deception romance, and the storyline on this one has a fun and unique twist. A low rumble of tension without overplayed drama carries the story to a well-crafted ending. The author knows how to keep sparks flying while keeping the heat level sweet, which is appropriate to the spiritual theme of the book. An engaging story with characters that feel like friends.

Mikal Dawn knows how to write a romantic comedy with equal parts rom and com. Mikal blends these genres into an unforgettable story that will keep you on the tips of your tingling toes. Her characters are authentic and believable. Mikal’s ability to seamlessly weave in a spiritual theme throughout the story leaves your heart full of the knowledge that God loves each of us. Prepare to laugh, fan your face, and wipe your tears all in the span of a single page. This debut novel will not disappoint.

Sharon Srock introduces us to Garfield, a small town in Oklahoma. Callie is the first woman we meet, along with her friends who have a Bible study with a different variety of cheesecake every week. While Srock may not be as well-known as Karen Kingsbury, she writes such emotion in her pages that I cannot put the books down once I pick them up. This author is amazing as she has created twenty books (and counting) from this one small town, with the characters intertwining with each other’s lives. Each with their own storylines (nothing cookie cutter about her) and each their own voice. Truly remarkable and definitely a favorite of mine.  

This commentary was developed by the faculty at the Moody Bible Institute. It is also easy to understand and provides comprehensive exposition of all passages and most verses. It should be noted that frequently there is commentary on a passage, or collection of verses, versus commentary on individual verses. This is helpful to understand the flow and context of a passage, but it can leave you recognizing you need to look elsewhere when you don’t feel like there is enough explanation of individual verses. There are also helpful maps and charts and bibliographies for further reading and study.

This is the strangest of the books I’ve chosen. I found it by accident while looking for something else in the British Library, and loved it immediately. The writer was George VI’s doctor, and this is his only novel.

On the surface, it’s the story of a grotesquely unlikeable and hypocritical father and son. But I prefer to ignore that and just enjoy its completely unique voice. The whole book is like a PG Wodehouse sentence: somehow transcending its literal meaning to become almost magically pleasing. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoy the phrase ‘the aunt that had stood with my mother’s mother at the foot of the stairs’ then you’ll like it.

I love that the subject of this book is about beginnings—THE beginning, in fact. As someone who became a believer at the age of fourteen, I felt secure in my understanding of the Bible and had little need or desire to be challenged on my understanding of controversial Biblical topics.

This is the book that changed all that for me. It introduced me to apologetics. I admire the gentle and noncombative way the astrophysicist author discusses how Genesis can literally describe an earth that is 4.5 billion years old. It was a fascinating exploration of Biblical analysis, Hebrew, and scientific study. I became so much more confident in my understanding of Genesis after reading this book.

I first heard the audio dramatization of this book on a podcast call The Untold Podcast, showcasing speculative fiction from Christian authors.

The story is short, telling of our unnamed narrator who is struggling with sin in his life. He reads the Bible verse, if thy hand offend then, cut if off. From there begins his meltdown into wanting to take off his hand because he has done sinful things with it.

What made this one so chilling is the rational outlook of the narrator. Then comes the grisly bits that make you squirm in your chair as you listen. Now, it’s in book form and I guarantee you, it’s a very good book. Thank God for grace!
