I had certain expectations when I picked up this book. I have to say, I was completely blown over because this was not what I expected. This book touched me deeply spiritually and emotionally. The relationship between the main characters was intriguing and the romance completely drew me in.

I read this series in one sitting and only came up for air after I closed the last book. Wow… So, I adore Holly. Her quirks are endearing and her pain is deep and understandable. She’s a survivor, not without deep, deep scars. I found myself cheering for her to start the journey toward trust and friendship. Watching her go from not trusting anyone at all to having a sweet father/daughter relationship that eventually develops warmed my heart.

I’ve been passionate about dogs and rescue dogs in particular since I got my first little rescue pup for Christmas when I was six years old. Tippy, a perfect blend of poodle and cocker spaniel, lived until my second year of law school. In this romantic suspense novel, it’s veterans who are disabled rather than the dogs. The book stars a woman who trains canines to be service dogs for former military members. I enjoyed learning about the training process and everything the dogs can do for the people they serve, including the attractive romantic hero featured in the story. D.D. Ayres’s books are very well researched, and the reader comes away with quite a bit of knowledge. I like books with that kind of take-away value. The story was also very engaging, with the characters facing difficult challenges but finding hope and love through the process.

This is a woman used to standing on her own two feet, but now they aren’t there. The love she has for the K-9 who went through the war with her, Shadow, shines through her actions, and in the way that she fights to bring Shadow home. Even though this novel highlights several very real issues faced by returning veterans and amputees, this is far from a “sob story.”

I grew up drawing cartoons, and as a Disney animator I learned the importance of creating characters that audiences could believe and empathize with. Humor has no geographic, religious, or racial boundaries – the human condition is universal, and humor speaks to us all, regardless of language.
