As a former middle school teacher and librarian, I know first-hand the power of story to motivate and teach. My favorite reads have always featured a quirky or bigger-than-life character and a setting that in some instances may seem ordinary but the circumstances of how the character ended up there are far from that. I became interested in metaphor and analogy as a graduate student in philosophy of science in the 1970s.
