I am instantly drawn to stories with voyages, spices, and trade. But as much as these, I love meddlesome and crafty gods. I’m not a religious person, but I love to understand how people behave around religion, how it influences their choices, and how our world’s history can be chronologized as a series of fanatical events and conquests. Fantasy gives me the option to explore characters and worlds where gods are not only inherently intrusive but also cast a long shadow on people’s nature, giving birth to folklore, myths, and, of course, great stories to tell. They drive destinies, but more importantly, they drive the resistance against being puppeteered.
This was one meaty book! Ken Liu has thrown away all the rules of writing and has yet written an absolute masterpiece of fantasy fiction.

I am a queer writer whose early love of science fiction and fantasy gave me an outlet for my creativity and new ways of seeing myself in the world. It was A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle and Timeline by Michael Crichton that first introduced me to time and space travel in fiction, but it was the new Doctor Who and shows like Twelve Monkeys that made me realize how mad and wonderful stories about time and space travel could be. And once I came to terms with my own queer identities, I saw an obvious space for my own contribution to the time travel canon.
The Space Between Worlds is less time travel than it is parallel dimensional travel but I think it’s worth fibbing for.

I actually read the entire Shades of Magic trilogy last year, but it makes sense to recommend the first book in the series. I've come to really appreciate V.E. Schwab for her diverse tales, and this trilogy hit the mark for me. The characters were interesting and engaging, and the relationships between them complex. The magic system and alternate Londons were extremely well-crafted. The pacing, story progression, and character development was all strong, and it made for an extremely satisfying, short fantasy series. I highly recommend it if you are looking to break up a large epic with a short, punchy series with satisfying world-building and character development.
