Few books have reminded me more powerfully that our circumstances and our inner life are not the same thing.

I first read Man's Search for Meaning years ago, and its impact has only deepened over time. Frankl's willingness to look directly at suffering without becoming defined by it challenged many of the assumptions I carried about happiness, success, and what it takes to live a meaningful life.

I return to this book because it continually reminds me that meaning is not something life hands us once everything finally goes our way. It is something we discover in how we meet what life places before us.

During difficult seasons of my own life, Frankl's perspective helped me remember that even when we cannot control our circumstances, we still have a relationship with how we respond to them. Few books have given me more courage, perspective, and hope.

No book has had a greater impact on my life than A Return to Love.

Marianne Williamson's writing cracked the door open to what would become a decades-long practice of A Course in Miracles. I encountered the book during a season when I was searching everywhere outside myself for peace, certainty, and answers. What struck me immediately was her ability to take ideas that felt distant and make them deeply human, relatable, and alive.

I return to this book because it reminds me of where so much of my journey began. It opened me to a way of seeing life that would continue unfolding for decades through study, practice, failure, forgiveness, and lived experience. Few books have stayed with me longer or shaped the course of my life more profoundly.

Few books helped me make sense of the collapse of my carefully constructed life more than Falling Upward.

Like many people, I spent decades building an identity—career, success, relationships, beliefs about who I was and who I needed to become. When much of that began to fall away, it felt like failure. Richard Rohr helped me see the possibility that something else might be happening.

What stayed with me was his suggestion that the losses, disappointments, and unravelings we spend so much energy resisting may actually become our greatest teachers. I didn't read this book as a theory. I read it while living it. Again and again, it helped me trust that what felt like falling apart might also be a doorway into something deeper and more true.

No book has challenged me, frustrated me, comforted me, and transformed me more than A Course in Miracles.

What began as curiosity became a companion for decades. I've returned to it through success and failure, addiction and recovery, love and loss, certainty and confusion. Somehow it continues to meet me wherever I am. 

I've put the book down more than once. Sometimes out of frustration. Sometimes, because I needed to stop studying what it pointed toward and go live it. Yet I always found myself returning. It continually invites me to question the stories, fears, and identities I've mistaken for myself.

After all these years, it still feels less like a book I finished and more like a conversation that continues to unfold.

After reading The Divine Conspiracy twice, I’m ready to dive in again. So many treasures are packed into these pages, waiting to be absorbed.

Anchored in the Sermon on the Mount, the author discusses our discipleship and how we related to Christ. Sometimes, we miss the life that’s in biblical text, but this book offers perspective that makes us take a second look and inspires our hearts.

I found so much freedom in this book. Richard Rohr put words to things I had long felt but struggled to articulate—that Christ’s presence is not confined to religion, rules, or a distant heaven but woven into everything, here and now.

This book expanded my view of God, shattering the small, transactional faith I had been handed and replacing it with a love big enough to hold all things. Rohr’s words helped me see Christ in the ordinary, in the broken, in myself—and that changed everything.

I admire how James Redfield isn’t afraid to put all his woo-wooiness out there into the world. He doesn’t hold back in The Tenth Insight, and presents the information in a fun, fast-paced adventure. I read this book early in my own spiritual quest, and when it came time to close those final pages, I found it difficult; I didn’t want the journey to end. At the time, Redfield’s concepts were just out of reach for me as I was starting to develop the spiritual muscles it would take to flex some of these larger ideas, and years later, I resonate entirely with them. In fact, this book has inspired me so much over the years that I want to write a musical theatre production based off the concepts he presents.

Because I am also English and became a minister when women were not readily accepted in this profession, this 14th-century English mystic, Julian of Norwich, felt like a friend. She was able to thrive in a male-dominated world. She taught about God-imagery that included not only the divine father but also the divine mother. She spoke and wrote about her revelations from Jesus that, unlike the fear-based religious teaching of her day, were about God’s love for all people. I cherish her well-known words: “All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.”

I’ll be honest: I have only scratched the surface of this book and the questions it asks and answers. How to deal with suffering and remain open to joy and beauty? I understand the book’s content at only the most superficial level. I suspect it’s going to take years for me to go deeper with it. As a writer, I am blown away by Trungpa’s style, which is clear, simple, and relatable. As a psychologist, I am humbled to see how clumsy and awkward our modern approaches are. 

The next one on my list of the top 5 spiritual books is The Book of Secrets by Osho. He is my favorite spiritual teacher, and although he never wrote any books, the texts from his speeches were published in several compilations. Everything you read from him can be useful, but this book stands above the rest in its length, depth and practicality.

This book is based on a 5000 year old tantric scripture consisting of 112 meditations to achieve liberation. What Osho basically does is that he adds commentaries and his own experiences to each of the techniques, thereby making them understandable and practical for the modern seeker. If I had to recommend any book on meditation, it would definitely be this one.
