I love how the different time periods work, all connected to the real stallion Lexington and Jarrett, the slave who’s with him since the day he foaled (and named him Darley). Insights on slavery from slaves’ POV, the Civil War and Reconstruction, horse racing and the owners and plantations, horse art and a Smithsonian search—and more. Beautifully written.

I often read books out of sequence. This is the fifth book in the series. The author does a good job of filtering in backstories and love interests making it easy to read as a stand-alone. The story is a funny, cozy mystery with unexpected twists and turns that had me guessing until the end. When Holly Schlivinik stumbles upon the body of the Bainbridge Department Store, Easter Bunny, she starts an investigation of her own. Despite the accused being an unpopular figure in the cutthroat California swimsuit industry, Holly doesn't believe she's the killer. The accused is mean but not a murderer. With help from a gossipy group of friends and a romantic interest in the police department she's determined to find the real killer. Holly's connection to the swimsuit industry and previous murders, makes her determination to find the killer even more compelling.

I was looking for a quick, sweet read, and this ticked all the boxes. From the first page, I knew I was in Hawaii. Stacy, a local B&B owner, investigates the new luxury resort as a guest. At the same time, Fisher, the billionaire hotel owner, is undercover as hotel staff. This was a fun scene, as the reader knows the truth. The conflict presents immediately, but the romance grows slowly. I prefer a romance that builds over time with a lot of push and pull. As their relationship moves forward, Casey wants more than just kisses from Fisher. But Fisher steps back. For me, This conflict was a good reflection of their backstories and personalities. This may bother some readers, expecting no spice even though it doesn't go anywhere.

Elif Shafak has done it again! A consummate storyteller, she immerses us in the very different stories of three individuals across time and place, their experiences linked by the part played in their respective fates through two of the great rivers of the world. This compassionate, profound novel, beautifully articulated, makes us think about the significance of belonging, displacement and much else. It makes for a compelling read and I see it as a joint first choice rather than a second favourite!

Yuki Carlsson Why Yuki loves this book

I love stories that offer a journey of self-discovery within a magical world, and Gaiman’s Stardust does just that. It follows the tale of a young man who crosses into a realm of magic to find a fallen star for his beloved, only to uncover truths about himself and the nature of love. Gaiman’s language is rich and poetic, immersing you in this magical land without losing a dark, whimsical tone. It’s paced like a fairy tale, yet there’s a maturity to it that’s deeply resonant for adult readers.

I’m drawn to Gaiman’s ability to weave myth and reality seamlessly, a balance I strive for in my own work. This book is ideal for anyone who loves a story that combines adventure with introspection, or fairy tales with a more adult perspective.

Book cover of Small Spaces

Angela Kecojevic Author Of Scareground

From my list on kids books to give you serious goosebumps.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always loved horror stories, right from when I was a kid, and I first watched Friday the 13th, the ultimate scary movie. The jump scare moment was everything. I spent time studying great suspense writers like Alfred Hitchcock, Stephen King, and R L Stine. I was in awe at how they had me turning the pages, unable to look away! I think more and more children are discovering the fun and thrill of scary stories, and I love nothing more than making sure I try and implement some of these rules, adding in my own originality, too!

Angela's book list on kids books to give you serious goosebumps

Angela Kecojevic Why Angela loves this book

It was the first spooky book for kids I’d ever read. I loved every second of it.

Once again, the school vibe was appealing, and watching a group of kids battle a field of scarecrows was spine-chilling stuff. Their friendship strengthened as their school trip began going horribly wrong.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat–I won’t ever look at a scarecrow the same way again!

What is this book about?

Neil Gaiman, long inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction, presents a bravura rendition of the Norse gods and their world from their origin though their upheaval in Ragnarok.

In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin's son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki-son of a giant-blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator.

Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the…

Book cover of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

Sam Davey Author Of The Chosen Queen

From my list on supernature magic, alchemy and enchantment.

Why am I passionate about this?

I write because I want to tell stories–and I also want to share great stories with others. An avid reader and writer of fantasy and speculative fiction, I have a love of the fantastic, the remarkable and the supernatural, which I have managed to sustain and develop alongside a successful working life in government and social administration. If you want to know about power–and what you need to wield it and control it, just give me a call. Great fantasy should tell universal truths, and sometimes, more difficult messages can be told more effectively using a supernatural metaphor. Telling those stories is what I do.

Sam's book list on supernature magic, alchemy and enchantment

Sam Davey Why Sam loves this book

My favorite fantasy novels are those that take place in real and recognizable worlds because they allow me to imagine more clearly what it could be like if the marvelous, the magical, and the mythical were just as real as the kitchen sink and the laundry basket.

Susanna Clark’s iconic first novel, set against the turmoil of the Napoleonic Wars, is built upon a recognizable and very credibly created backdrop of social and economic unrest, bloody conflict, and international politicsat the heart of which is the quest of the eponymous Strange and Norrell to bring real magic back to the world.

The two magicians are the only people able to make the magic work—and as they become more successful in their endeavors, they become the most famous men of their day—helping the Duke of Wellington to defeat Napoleon and setting the country on its heels with their…
