Why Alisha loves this book
I think this should be talked about more. The topic, and the author. She brought awareness to something so important (at least in places outside of China) and did it with a beautiful, heartbreaking book. The world lost a good soul when we lost her, but I’m grateful to read her work, and I hope humanity stops letting stuff like this happen—and be suppressed.
5 authors picked The Rape of Nanking as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.
In December 1937, the Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking. Within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered,a death toll exceeding that of the atomic blasts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Using extensive interviews with survivors and newly discovered documents, Iris Chang has written the definitive history of this horrifying episode.
