Book cover of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI

❤️ loved this book because...

I read a lot of nonfiction, largely history. It’s uncommon to find one that I can’t put down, but this one surpassed my entire list of favorites and went right to the top spot. It’s easy to read in terms of pace and immersion, and it’s easy to understand. It’s much harder to understand humans, and this book made me reflect deeper on that and so much more. I’ll be reading it again and again on my journey through humanity…

What is this book about?

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions and sent their children to study in Europe.

Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. As the death toll climbed, the FBI took up the case. But the bureau badly bungled the investigation. In desperation, its young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to unravel the mystery. Together with the Osage he and his undercover…

Book cover of Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator

❤️ loved this book because...

I’m studying World War Two history for my masters, debating focusing on genocide and mass atrocities, specifically how propaganda helps create an environment of mass acceptance. This book ended up on my reading list for casual research… And blew my mind. Much of the stuff he articulates are things I think we all know on some level by now, but he makes it possible to conceptualize, to bring form to a sort of abstract understanding. It is hard to face and harder to reflect deeply on, but I think it’s a message all should hear.

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked Trust Me, I'm Lying as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

You've seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don't know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me.

I'm a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs-as much as any one person can.

IN TODAY'S CULTURE... Blogs like Gawker, BuzzFeed, and The Huffington Post drive the media agenda. Bloggers are slaves to money, technology, and…

My 3rd favorite read in 2024

Book cover of The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II

❤️ loved this book because...

I think this should be talked about more. The topic, and the author. She brought awareness to something so important (at least in places outside of China) and did it with a beautiful, heartbreaking book. The world lost a good soul when we lost her, but I’m grateful to read her work, and I hope humanity stops letting stuff like this happen—and be suppressed.

What is this book about?

In December 1937, the Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking. Within weeks, more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers were systematically raped, tortured, and murdered,a death toll exceeding that of the atomic blasts of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Using extensive interviews with survivors and newly discovered documents, Iris Chang has written the definitive history of this horrifying episode.
