During my time in India, I met some amazing women scientists. The Brahmaputra is one of the world's largest branching rivers, with multi-branched channels that branch and merge to form a distinctive branching pattern. It is home to temporary islands, and the flow of the water exhibits rapid periodic fluctuations between seasons.

Just as the water of the Brahmaputra has to navigate many obstacles from the river's source to the sea, women scientists in India face many obstacles in their work and personal lives. This book documents and illustrates the beauty of science and the importance of involving more women in science worldwide to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and reduce the multitude of contemporary socio-environmental problems, using India as an example.

During my many years working for UNESCO in Arabia, Africa, East Asia, and South Asia, as well as during my early years in Europe, I had the great privilege of not only traveling to many countries and experiencing the true beauty of natural landscapes, seascapes, and coastal areas, but also meeting people of different nationalities, ethnicities, and religions, and I came to appreciate many of their cultural traditions and customs.

UNESCO has three types of designated protected areas, including UNESCO Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Global Geoparks. My hometown in northern Germany is located in the Terra Vita Geopark, which celebrates the 'life story of the Earth.' This book provides an excellent overview of the UNESCO Global Geoparks of the world.

I have been actively involved in the scientific research, conservation, restoration, and development of mangrove ecosystems since 1989. Mangroves are an important part of the natural systems of our plant world and are of enormous importance to wildlife and humans both ecologically and for a whole range of socio-economic reasons. Mangroves are world champions in carbon sequestration. Mangroves can grow in salt water, and 97% of the water on Earth is salty.

This ATLAS provides comprehensive information on the importance and biogeography of mangroves, although an updated and web-based new version is urgently needed. At the moment, this is the best ATLAS we have, and I highly recommend it as a 'must have' for anyone serious about science-based professional conservation and restoration of mangrove ecosystems.

Although much of the world's desert ecosystems are poor in plant species and have very low vegetation cover and density, it should not be forgotten that even the flora in desert ecosystems provides a variety of services and benefits to both humans and animals.

Renée Richer and her collaborators have put together a wonderful and highly informative account of the flora of Qatar, which I believe is an inspiration to contemporary conservationists, botanists, and vegetation ecologists. It belongs in the collection of both professional and amateur nature lovers.

Have you ever ridden a camel in the desert? I admit I have not been to Arabia, but I did ride a camel along the beach at sunset in Western Australia. I know the smell, the bumping from side to side, and the resulting aching bottom. That experience, while I did enjoy it, is not one I wish to repeat in a hurry. To read about it from a comfy chair at home is my preferred option. Amanda takes us on an unforgettable ride through history and culture, complete with intrigue, action, and drama for everyone. I tend to read adventure books with male protagonists because I have three sons and know they would prefer to read about boys, so to read a story with a female hero is delightfully refreshing. 

Geomorphology (the study of landforms) is central to planetary science because landforms are readily observable. This book provides some of the best explanations of geomorphic processes and the formation of various surface features available.

Sometimes geomorphology can just be descriptive, but this treatment of processes is more rigorous than most, yet readable.

This book provides an appealing overview of waves and currents with a folksy tone and scientific perspective. This book provides a quick and easy-to-understand guide to the top five physical beach hazards:  rip currents, dumping waves (shorebreaks), shallow water diving, surging waves and big, storm-generated waves.

Rob has dedicated his life to making Australian beaches safer, including giving talks on the “Science of the Surf” to thousands of schoolchildren. Beaches are fun but dangerous places under certain conditions, and this book is for everyone who loves the surf.    

One of biologist Heinrich’s books, an extended nonfiction essay, may seem an eccentric choice here, but–like other works of this writer’s–it has had a profound effect on the way I regard the natural world in northern New England, my home territory.

There are life-scientists who write well and ones who command a patent, deep knowledge of their subject matter. None comes to my mind who so magnificently combines a fine novelist’s sensitivity to language with so broad and detailed a scientific awareness as Heinrich does. And he is bold. It takes a mind and writer of his caliber, for instance, to make a thumb-sized golden-crowned kinglet the hero—and a doughty one at that, one obliged to eat thirteen times his body weight to survive subzero nights–of his study.

Each spread in this memorable book offers beautiful illustrations and a feast of information for curious kids. Featured animals include prairie dogs, trapdoor spiders, satin bower birds, coral, and others. The text focuses on these species as builders—of cozy homes, traps for prey, special spots to attract mates, and more. Starting with the book title on the cover (the reader can see how it was “built” with cross-hatch lines guiding letter placement!), I was totally engaged. So much information, so well shared! I fell in love with the teeny, tiny harvest mouse.

Although I am originally from the UK, I now live in Australia—home to amazing creatures, many of whom make homes in hollows. This book rams home the importance of protecting habitat because it doesn’t just highlight species like possums, owls, parrots, quolls, snakes, and goannas, but it integrates them with their environment. A Hollow is a Home is designed in a magazine-like format, with illustrations and photos, which I have found connects really well with reluctant readers. The bite-size sections are useful for school projects and, if you don’t live in Australia, this book is a fantastic way to learn about global biodiversity!
