This book presented me with many questions I could not stop thinking about. Without the partnership and support of the dog, what would our human history and cultures look like? From the Arctic regions dependent upon sled dogs to all the pastoral and hunting peoples, would these cultures have existed without dogs as partners?

Derr not only shows us the science of canine evolution–how the wolf became the dog–this book also asserts the essential question we should continually ask ourselves–are we doing right by our oldest and deepest animal companion?

I have always been fascinated and in awe of working livestock guardian dogs. One of our first human/dog partnerships, this group of dogs possesses a unique set of genetically inherited behaviors.

His masterful romp through Earth’s history from a plant perspective further opened my eyes to a plethora of fascinating details. The evolution of oxygen and greenhouse gases, the giant insects of the coal age, and flourishing forests of polar regions. I learned so much and loved it.

I love this book because it appeals to the evolutionary biology fan in me, as is evident in my book.

Howard traces the history of eggs from ancient single-celled organisms to dinosaurs to the emergence of mammals. He explores how eggs adapted to countless environments and how these adaptations shaped biodiversity.

It’s a deeply engaging work of nonfiction from an enthusiastic author who shows that understanding the egg is fundamental to understanding life itself.

Why is it that looking at the past, reading our history, studying ancient ruins, makes me feel better about facing today’s world?

I think about connection, a feeling that, despite having lived hundreds or thousands of years ago, there are still shared goals and commonalities between myself and them. 

Harari is one of those rare authors who can distill enormous amounts of information into a single sentence and hold your attention at the same time. Early in the book, Harari explains that as humans evolved to walk upright, the narrowing of the pelvis and hips made childbirth more treacherous. His line for this: “Women paid extra.” As a mother myself, when I read that line, it felt so modern, so lived-in, like the same line could describe my own feelings today.

I like his clear account of the fundamental laws of nature, emergent theories and levels of reality, their implications and how we can talk about the Universe from the big bang to human experience, consciousness and meaning, without resorting to any mystical agents. 

My father gave me a copy of this book when I was in 6th grade and it introduced the world of natural science to me. This was the first in a series of volumes that collected his monthly essays written for Natural History magazine.

Gould has an eye for unusual scientific phenomena that illuminate a deeper truth about the relationship between humanity and the natural world. He was not afraid to tackle moral issues, such as eugenics and the science of IQ, recognizing the importance of the popular scientist as more than just a translator.
