Books like Talkin' Greenwich Village — picked by fans

I’ve read many books about The Beatles. I have very high standards, given that The Beatles are easily my favorite rock band.

I love their music so much, I even wrote a science fiction alternate history novel in which John Lennon was never assassinated, and The Beatles were still together making great music in the 1990s.

Dreaming the Beatles by Rob Sheffield checks all of my boxes. Not only does it contain fabulous insights into The Beatles, laced with little-known facts about them, but the book is written in Sheffield’s inimitable style, in which he plays on the titles of Beatles songs with puns that have the punch of truth, like I would be doing if I said I always wanted to be a paperback writer. 

I already told you how much I love The Beatles.

Billy J. Kramer had some great hit records with songs written by Lennon and McCartney—my favorite is “From A Window,” actually written just by McCartney—and Kramer knew The Beatles first-hand. Turns out that Kramer (born William Howard Ashton) not only has an ear for music (he’s still rockin’) but an eye for detail.

His autobiography is chock-full of memorable details. I couldn’t put it down.

I was a devoted fan of Bob Shannon on WCBS-FM Radio in New York City for decades. He was right up there with Alan Freed and Murray the K.

And he wrote Behind the Hits back in the 1980s, a gift to the future, including me, a gift to anyone who wants to know more about a song that they danced to as a kid, or found themselves humming or singing to themself or someone else on a moonlit summer night.

In addition to The Beatles, one of the great loves of my life has been the work of Marshall McLuhan.

In fact, I’ve written two books about him—Digital McLuhan (1999) and McLuhan in an Age of Social Media (2015/2024)—as well as numerous articles, and recorded audiobooks and podcasts about his explorations of media and their relevance to our current age.

I also had the pleasure of knowing McLuhan and his family, and working with him on several important projects. So, you can imagine my joy in discovering Thomas MacFarlane’s The Beatles and McLuhan.

Anyone who is curious about other cities and cultures will love the complete series of the This Is… books by Miroslav Sasek. They are filled with exciting facts and the colorful illustrations are truly delightful. From New York, to London, to Hong Kong, and many more, these books will inspire you to travel the world!

They were poets, actresses, singers, artists, journalists, publishers, baronesses, and benefactresses. They were thinkers, and they were drinkers. Edna St Vincent Millay, Djuna Barnes, Isadora Duncan, and Ma Rainey–knew how to have fun.

I love the way the author deftly describes each woman—women who lived in an era that still defined women as second-class citizens. Each was unique in her own way—bold, brassy, and making no compromise with gender and sexual norms of the day.

This book is an entertaining and informative guide to the music, martinis, and sometimes mayhem of these daring, brazen, and historical heroines! 

Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because the main character (and in fact most of the characters) in this book is a cat it’s only for very young readers. This charming and elegant story, the first of a series, takes place in Greenwich Village, where a small black orphaned cat named Jenny finds a home with a sea captain and a community with her neighborhood felines. Jenny’s explorations of the then-dicey neighborhood and encounters with less fortunate cats are ridiculously poignant and moving, and her foot-high view of her city feels entirely authentic.  

This book gave me a drive. Goodman’s account of the Strokes’ debaucherous rise in 9/11-era New York City ignited my passion for oral history and to tell the story of the music that made me. Downtown cool kid garage rock shaped popular culture immensely, but so did My Chemical Romance and their cohort (even more so, I’d argue). Up to this point (MMITB was published in 2017), 2000s emo was frequently misconstrued by those too old to have understood its impact or left out of the conversation entirely.

As I conducted interviews for my book, I challenged my own hypotheses (and personal biases) about these two scenes. I learned they intermingled more than I thought. I talked to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz about DJing the ultra-hip downtown party Misshapes and My Chemical Romance’s Mikey Way about trying to catch a glimpse of Madonna at the same place.

Growing up in New York City, I’ll never forget my first experience, at around the age of seven, with people literally living underground. Our subway stalled in a tunnel in front of an abandoned station. The lights went off in the car and the platform outside was cast in an eerie orange glow by a single bulb.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows, charged my subway car, and started banging wildly and laughing maniacally, just on the other side of the glass to me. This continued for what felt like a million years before the train came back to life, and we moved on.

Decades later, I discovered this book about a parallel city below mine where people like that man live an alternative existence in miles and miles of dark warrens underground. I’m obsessed with it.

My favorite gay autobiography. Humorous, explicit, and thought-provoking. Like my story, his is far from a neatly packaged “coming out” story of self-acceptance. He describes some way-out-of-bounds-for-most-people sexual adventures in detail but with no intention to shock or titillate. He is just telling stories he finds interesting, and he is a great storyteller. Not surprising, since he is a celebrated science fiction author.

Always surprising in a quirky way. Example: in the 1950s, he is at an outdoor gay cruising area at night when there is a police raid. It is only as the men flee that he grasps how many were there: hundreds. It is his first sense of being in a large gay male community, and it is empowering.
