100 Books Like Sounds Good!

I would be remiss not to include this fantastic, concise, beautifully illustrated biography of my favorite band. They influenced my picture book series from color palette choices to little easter eggs.

This book begins with the lads as children, and takes us along the way through their meteoric rise, showing the hard work in Germany and then how they landed a number one in America. This makes for a great inspirational read. 

I adore this whole series by Marion Billet. It was hard to pick just one as the classical music, the four seasons, music from around the world, and nutcracker (to name some of the more music-based ones!) are just fantastic. They make babies, toddlers and even older readers react physically to the sound of the music they’re hearing and delight in the bright bold illustrations. They’re a great way to introduce different types of music or instruments. 

The rock and roll cats in this book are a particular favorite of mine, as I used to jive regularly in London until our teacher moved away to Nashville! I gifted this book to my two-year-old niece, and even her older sisters would all join in trying out different dance moves to the music. Great fun.

This has to be one of the funniest books about music. I bought it maybe ten years ago or so from the children's bookshop Kinderboekwinkel in Amsterdam. It made me laugh out loud, even though I can’t read or speak Dutch. The illustrations speak for themselves.

Valentijn is a terrible violin player, and after ruining a party for the Queen’s birthday, the townsfolk banish him. He can’t understand why as he thinks he’s great. He performs heroic deeds elsewhere using his playing to help folk, even though it’s terrible. He carries on blissfully unaware and ends up helping a knight in peril and eventually saves the town from invaders and finally performs for the King and Queen, even though everyone has their ears covered.

The illustrations are so lively and energetic, and you can hear how bad the violin must sound from all the reactions of the people and animals… show more.

A wonderfully witty picture book. Rhythmic rhyming text along with lines from rock songs scattered throughout for the adult reader to chuckle at, as well as some great animal band puns. The illustrations are packed with humor.

This book shows us how Badger loves noise and wants to find an outlet for it. He tries choirs, recorder orchestras and an ant marching band, but nothing is the right fit. That is until he stumbles upon a flyer for a rock and roll band and he finds his tribe.

It’s a great story about identity and empowerment in a fun way. It will resonate with young readers who probably find they’re told to be still and quiet, when inside they might feel the opposite! 

After filling my head with theories and practices, it was time for me to break everything down, which this book does brilliantly, and start writing my own melodies and harmonies.

Designed almost like a workbook, these very thoughtful and insightful steps helped me understand the fundamental process of writing. They started with exercises such as creating a simple five-note melody and built until I was crafting entire songs.

I love this book because it is a truly comprehensive textbook on contemporary film scoring, covering invaluable sections on musical techniques, the relation of music to film, the technology of film scoring, and the business and lifestyle of film composers. It features references to 150 films as well as interviews with many film composers.

The extensive practical information on musical techniques and technology, as well as the relation of music to picture and drama, are timeless and still valid in today’s world. I also love the way this book presents a wealth of information on the relation and interaction of the composer and filmmaker. 

I love this book because it provides not only specific techniques for film scoring but also an overview of the lifestyle and business considerations of the film composer. This book reads like a novel but still presents a multitude of valuable information in a well-organized and anecdotal manner. It’s not an exhaustive textbook, but is a great place to start to get a feel for what it means to be a film composer.

I read the whole thing (132 pages) on a 5-hour flight from LA to New York. I love the fact that there are appendices (film/music schools, professional societies, and organizations, suggested scores to study, suggested reading, and websites) as well as a glossary of technical terms.

My last choice is about a musical girl who finds a very different kind of “instrument” to play!

Twelve-year-old Emmy just moved from Wisconsin to San Francisco for her dad’s big break as a pianist. Emmy wants to be a musician, too, but can’t find the right instrument to play (I can relate!).

Notes and classical terms are in her head, but not her fingers in this novel-in-verse. Instead of music as an elective, Emmy ends up in computer science and makes friends with a quiet girl named Abigail.

Emmy learns java script, and the reader learns along with her. In the end, Emmy finds a way to make her own kind of music through computer coding.

I wanted to learn how to write melodies and countermelodies from the best, and Fux is the legend who taught the greats. Bach, Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven all carefully studied these sage lessons.

Even though it was written in 1725, the book is enormously approachable, written in a series of conversations between a teacher and student. And yes, you don’t have to read it in Latin; it’s been translated into modern English. 

This is a great little book for introducing younger readers to their first pieces of classical music. Although it is meant for a younger audience, there are many anecdotes that slightly older readers will also enjoy. The accompanying music is available in both a CD and an online version. The recordings are from Naxos which has an excellent music library of top-notch performances. A great value!
