Book cover of Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life

Diane Dreher Author Of Pathways to Inner Peace

From my list on finding inner peace.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m a writer, researcher, and lifelong learner. As the daughter of an Air Force pilot, I followed my father on his assignments around the world and went to 10 schools before graduating from high school. But my greatest education was learning how people from different cultures find joy, meaning, and peace of mind. I have a Ph.D. in English literature and a master’s degree in counseling. I’m now Professor Emeritus and Associate Director of the Applied Spirituality Institute at Santa Clara University, a professional certified coach, and lecturer in the Positive Psychology Guild in the UK. I love books that bring us greater peace of mind, inspiration, and hope.

Diane's book list on finding inner peace

Diane Dreher Why Diane loves this book

I love this book and reread it often.

Why? Because it reassures me that I’m not alone in searching for greater peace of mind. Jon Kabat-Zinn combines stories from Buddhism and his own practice with humor and words of encouragement to remind me that it is up to me to wake up from the mindless rush of compulsive planning, worry, regret, and resentment that too often cycles through my mind like the voices on a talk radio station.

He also reminds me to be kind to myself, not to fall into shame or self-accusations, because mindfulness is an ongoing practice to become more centered, aware, and balanced.

I smile when I catch myself drifting away from being mindfully present, take a deep breath, and return to the here and now. And this process continues in my formal meditation practice each morning and my ongoing attempts to be more mindfully aware…

Diane's book list on finding inner peace

Diane Dreher Why Diane loves this book

I love this book for many reasons.

It reads like a novel, but it’s a true story, a story of a young boy raised in a dysfunctional family—his father was an alcoholic who couldn’t hold down a job, and his mother was suicidally depressed. Poverty, eviction, his mother’s repeated attempts at suicide—this was his life until one day, at age 12, he met a kind woman who taught him to meditate.

I won’t give away the details of the story, only to say that I felt personally connected to young Jim as he awakened to greater peace of mind, hope, and possibility. And in his quest, I saw my own quest to reach for something beyond what had been to what could be.

In this book, I found insight and inspiration, reminders to pursue my own mindfulness practice, to leave the past behind and open my heart to the miracles…

He credits Ruth for this incredible turnaround: the remarkable woman he met at the Cactus Rabbit Magic Shop, who devoted the summer to transforming his mind and opening his heart.

In this uplifting memoir, Jim explains the visualisation techniques Ruth…

Diane Dreher Why Diane loves this book

I read Shauna Shapiro’s Good Morning, I Love You when I was going through some difficult times, dealing with old abusive family patterns and trying to give myself the love and acceptance I hadn’t received as a child.

Shauna tells how she discovered the approach to mindful kindness and loving self-acceptance when she was also going through difficult times, and her therapist told her to say, “Good morning, Shauna, I love you.”

It took her a while to do this, and it’s taken me a while to follow her example. But her book was like a kind, supportive friend, reminding me that I’m not alone, that I can give myself the loving acceptance that I need and heal my childhood pain, one day, one small act of kindness, at a time.

This book has made a positive difference in my life.

Diane's book list on finding inner peace

Diane Dreher Why Diane loves this book

I love this book because the gratitude practice has made me happier and brought me greater peace of mind.

Lately, I’ve been feeling stressed, dealing with an undercurrent of insecurity and anxiety, worrying about things that haven’t happened yet, wondering what to do about them. In his years of research, Robert Emmons has found that a simple gratitude practice can bring us happiness and make a major difference in our worldview. And I’ve experienced this for myself.

Pausing to think of three things I’m grateful for each day and pausing throughout the day to acknowledge what I’m grateful for is helping me shift from a stressed-out state to become more calm, more confident, more hopeful. I smile more often, realizing how gratitude helps me recognize life’s small miracles, shifting my attention from the shadows to the light.

I’m grateful for this book that showed me how.

What is this book about?

A scientifically groundbreaking, eloquent look at how we benefit—psychologically, physically, and interpersonally—when we practice gratitude.

Did you know that there is a crucial component of happiness that is often overlooked?

Robert Emmons—editor-in-chief of the Journal of Positive Psychology—examines what it means to think and feel gratefully in Thanks! and invites readers to learn how to put this powerful emotion into practice.

Scientifically speaking, regular grateful thinking can increase happiness by as much as 25 percent, while keeping a gratitude journal for as little as three weeks results in better sleep and more energy. But there's more than science to embrace…

Book cover of Tough Titties: On Living Your Best Life When You're the F-ing Worst

Ann Aikens Author Of A Young Woman's Guide to Life: A Cautionary Tale

From my list on funniest memoirs with advice for a happy life.

Why am I passionate about this?

Raised when unsupervised kids roamed freely in the woods, my friends and I became adept at finding fun. My 20s were spent in New York in the 1980's zeitgeist of exploration and excess. A lifelong fan of comedy, I worked at the Comedy Cellar, where I booked and watched countless standup comics. Later, I left NYC’s glamor for Vermont’s nature. Since then, my Vermont newspaper column, "Upper Valley Girl," has amused and astonished (and possibly appalled) readers with humor and candor. Ever adventurous to the point of risk, making awful mistakes, and enduring impossible people, I learned limits the hard way. I advise young people not to do the same.

Ann's book list on funniest memoirs with advice for a happy life

Ann Aikens Why Ann loves this book

Advice by way of memoir, which I liked more as it went along. Maybe it was a slow start for me because she had seemingly lucky breaks, and I’ve had struggles. By the end, I was in LOVE.

She is frank, ballsy, unapologetic, kickass riotous, with an apparent ability to moonwalk, all of which is to say totally New York City in a way that I badly miss, having left 30 years ago.

I relived some of my youth. I learned things and laughed.

Deanie Humphrys-Dunne Author Of My Life at Sweetbrier: A Life Changed by Horses

From my list on encouraging children to believe in themselves.

Why am I passionate about this?

My parents encouraged me to become a children’s author when I was very young. At first, I thought that was the silliest idea ever, but I found creating stories to be fun and inspiring. I’ve been an award-winning published author since 2009, when I had an intuition to try writing stories for children. I love being a role model for children; someone who can show them that they can achieve much more than they imagine if they persevere. My personal story, My Life at Sweetbrier; A Life Changed by Horses, is a testament that remarkable things can be accomplished through perseverance. I’m honored my work has earned many literary awards.

Book cover of We Were Made for These Times: Ten Lessons for Moving Through Change, Loss, and Disruption

Diana Winston Author Of The Little Book of Being: Practices and Guidance for Uncovering Your Natural Awareness

From my list on Buddhist stories from lesser-known women authors.

Why am I passionate about this?

There are so many good spiritual books out there that get little attention, especially books by women and women of color. I have been a meditation practitioner for three decades, running a mindfulness center at UCLA, and been teaching and sharing Buddhist and mindfulness teaching for 20+ years. I need my sources of inspiration too! Each of these books forced me to think—and brought new depth to my own meditation practice. I am interested in how the Buddhist and mindfulness teachings, which I love so deeply, can help us build resiliency and weather the challenges of the intersecting current ecological, political, and social crises. These books are a great start.
