I think this is my favorite novel about grief of all time.
I’ve read it more than once; I’ve studied its lines and have it on my ‘best books’ shelf at home. I love how E. Lockhart made each character so their own; yet fit them all together perfectly. I could relate to this story of cousins as I’m close to my own cousins and write about this strong bond myself.
I also fell in love with the perfect setting of this book—an island that becomes one extended family’s playground, with all its rituals and special spots. This is a must-read for the summertime for me (and maybe even every summer).

After being asked to read it to a group of first graders recently, I dissolved into tears having to read the scene where Charlotte dies, alone. The students that day thought I was silly. I loved this book because the writing broke my heart (and helped me heal it).
The main character, Lennie, loses her sister in the novel, and I related so deeply. I lost my cousin—who was like a sister to me—and felt every word of this book. I know the feelings, thoughts, and experiences Lennie has, and I would be surprised if someone experiencing grief didn’t understand them too.
I especially loved how this book reminded me of the dual experiences we have with grief…how part of us wants to stay behind in the darkness because it’s hard to move on after loss, but the other part is always trying to help us move forward.

I loved this book because it was a psychological thriller, done right.
I was guessing the whole time, second-guessing myself when I thought I might have some of it figured out. I admire Lisa Jewell’s writing and her ability to make you want to read through the discomfort.
Ultimately, I love how this book showed a mother’s unrelenting search for the truth and how a mother won’t give up until she has answers for her child. It had me flipping the pages furiously til the end.
