Most of my published titles are about animals or involve them in some fashion. My Cats in the Mirror alien rescue cat series has been winning awards for a decade, and the two dog companion books have won the hearts of middle-grade readers, with a third companion book due out in 2026. Even my science fiction books for adults are about half-tiger/half-human creatures. Cats are definitely my favorite, but give me a book about a cute animal, and I’m happy.
I fully credit “Socks” with not only inspiring my early love of reading but also showing me that cats can be the main character in a book and be thoroughly delightful.
There’s no way I would be writing what I do now if not for this book. I have no idea how many times I’ve read it, but my childhood copy sits on my shelf to this day. There’s a reason it’s still listed as a “Teachers’ Pick” after over 50 years.

Just the other day, I handed it to someone shopping at my local library’s used book store, confident it would meet the needs of a reluctant reader in her life. It's a charming, heart-warming story.

I mean, not sure how much I need to say about the delight this book has brought to children since 1952. After being asked to read it to a group of first graders recently, I dissolved into tears having to read the scene where Charlotte dies, alone. The students that day thought I was silly. Yeah, as a kid, that didn’t bother me much. As an adult, well.
There’s something in this tale of love, friendship, and courage for all ages. Excellent for read-aloud if you are willing to commit to using different voices and really hamming it up.

The adorable factor is HIGH with “Odder.” It has cute animals and an endearing story, and it’s based on the Monterey Aquarium’s real program that cares for lost and abandoned otter pups.
You can “awww” your way through it, but there are also lessons about environmental care woven into the lyrical story. Some sad parts, but nothing that should overwhelm young ones. It left me with a warm feeling and a bit of a desire to care for my own sea otter pup.

Pooh Bear and his friends have been favorites since I was old enough to hold a book. A. A. Milne’s poetry is wonderful, but when Pooh and Piglet come on the scene, there’s a special magic.
