65 Books Like North American Lake Monsters

This was one of the strangest, most beautiful books I’ve ever read. At first, the format can throw you off. A chorus of dead voices, snippets of historical and imagined texts? But once I got into the rhythm, it felt like something sacred. The cemetery setting becomes a limbo space where spirits cling to their stories, fears, and unfinished business.

I found myself unexpectedly emotional, especially in how it portrayed grief—Lincoln’s grief, yes, but also the collective grief of the dead. It made me think about what we leave behind and how love can echo even after death. It was haunting in the best way.

This is the most beautiful book I have ever read. Seriously. Line to line, nothing beats it! I’m never not thinking of Russell’s work. One sister quests for love with the ghost of a dead canal bargeman in the Florida Everglades, while her younger, alligator-wrestling sister follows her with the Bird Man, hoping to rescue her from a tragic fate.

I thought it was hilarious that while this epic quest is going on, their third sibling is working at a trashy amusement park to financially support their family. It sounds like a lot jammed together, but Russell doesn’t make a single misstep. I was wondering the whole time what was real and what was fantasy, and the truth is one of the most devastating reveals in all of fiction.  

I've been reading Kelly Link's genre-bending stories for years and had been waiting for her to put out a novel forever, and wow, I was not disappointed by this one! I'm a sucker for any book about resurrection, teen angst, bargains with the gods, and finding love in a complicated world.

I loved following the story of the four teenagers as they formed and dissolved their alt-rock band, as they tried to solve the mystery of their own deaths, and as they stumbled through relationship after relationship in hilarious/heartfelt ways.

The novel is sprawling and made me feel like I was living in town with these cosmically cursed kids, living through each of the magical happenings right by their side. When it was all over, I felt bereft because I was no longer their neighbor...and I think that's the best possible way to feel after finishing the last chapter.

This book combines so much of what I love in weird, fantastical literature. Beautiful sentences. Odd ghosts. A grief-stricken reincarnation of Joan of Arc’s Executioner. I loved the narrative arc of the failed punk artist as he tries to drive to LA to attend his ex-wife’s funeral in the hopes of finding some redemption.

This one hit all the right emotional notes for me, and I can’t say I’ve ever read another book like it. Honestly, all of Rosson’s books do this. Don’t sleep on them!

When she finally meets the guy of her dreams, he bites her. Not in a fun, sexy way but in an I’m about turn you into a werewolf kind of way. To keep her from going feral, she’s forced to attend St. Ailbea’s Academy aka werewolf school. I love academy books and this one has all the feels.  

This werewolf coming-of-age story is amazing. There is an absolutely terrible movie version that is nothing like the book. Skip the movie. Read the book!

I devoured it in one sitting and immediately started rereading it. It’s got all that angsty romance that a YA paranormal story should have and then some.

When it escapes, they are forced into a cat-and-mouse chase across Florida. No paycheck can be worth the horror and torment that Jeff Strand’s bloody comedy puts them through.

Alpha & Omega is a novella by Patricia Briggs, but it’s not one to miss! It starts the story of Charles and Anna (who are mentioned but not really seen or featured in the Mercy Thompson series) and slides right into the first book—Cry Wolf—in the Alpha & Omega series.

If you love a heroine who is a little broken but still fighting, this is for you. Anna has endured so much when she meets Charles, and their romance arc from the novella to the latest release is epic. There are six novels in the series + the novella, and honestly, I might like it even more than the Mercy Thompson series.

Charles’ taciturn nature, his soft side that only Ana gets to see, and how everyone else in the world fears him as the second most dangerous werewolf make him incredibly swoon-worthy.

Jacky is a relatable character who’s gone through a major upheaval.

She’s become a werecat. Not raised in werecat society, she doesn’t let their views against other supernatural species stop her from doing what is right. Despite a surrogate father who thinks he’s always right, and siblings who want her to conform, Jacky very much marches to the beat of her own drum. Life is never dull when you’re a werecat with honor.
