64 Books Like Money-Smart Solopreneur

As a fan of fantasy books about quests, I was familiar with Terry Brooks’ Shannara series.

Since I enjoyed his writing and his characters, I picked up this one on the assumption that it would be similar. Instead, I encountered a story about Ben Holiday, who purchased a magic kingdom from a fancy gift catalog and traveled to a new world where he became the ruler.

The characters appealed; especially Abernathy, the court scribe turned into a soft-coated, wheaten terrier by the wizard, Questor Thews.

Although a mature man, Ben’s trials upon obtaining the throne and adjusting to the magic of his new home support the theme of a hero’s coming-of-age story. With a few wrinkles and twists of magic, and a humorous overtone, I recommend this book as a nice change of pace from more serious fantasy tales.

Just like any new habit you want to incorporate into your lifestyle, it takes a conscientious effort to practice that habit every single day. Being your own boss is much, much harder than working for someone else (I know this from personal experience!) and Ms. Bolon provides the tools and tips one needs to successfully give structure to an otherwise wildly unstructured venture. Her tone is fun and conversational and makes one feel as if they have just come away from an energizing coffee date with an old friend.

When I was growing up, my mother always criticized me whenever I tried to sing. “You’re terrible at this,” she told me. She also criticized my endeavors at dancing, writing, and the arts. It wasn’t until I was much older I realized just how insecure she was and how she feared my failure at any of the things I wanted to do would somehow reflect on her. What attracted me to this book was actually the title. In recent years I’ve taken professional singing lessons (including opera!) and discovered that the only thing holding me back was my lack of confidence in pushing the envelope. Everything is possible—including being your own boss (of anything!) as long as you don’t allow yourself to become overwhelmed or listen to the naysayers more than to your own heart.

While I don’t agree with his politics, Branson has been a force to be reckoned with in all of his endeavors. From the time he was a young man, he recognized that life was all about taking bold chances and leaping into the fray without a safety net or, in many cases, adequate finances. His words of wisdom can be applied to anyone who sees a need that has yet to be filled and has the chutzpah to assemble resources and make it a reality. There’s also an object lesson that not everything one attempts is destined for success and that’s all right as well.

This book played a part in my main source of income. Starting my own proofreading business wasn’t easy. I did have help from others, but I wanted to mention this book as a good starter to give insight and ideas on how to start your own freelance proofreading business. You can start it as a side-hustle, or you can go full-time, it’s up to you!

The book helped me find more happiness, focus, and inner peace.

The focused life beats the modern-day, high-pressure corporate life by a mile. And, as a nice side effect, my productivity skyrocketed after reading it. I also understood why there is always room for leaps in human productivity – because of the fractal nature of the 80/20 principle.

After focusing on the 20% yielding 80% of the results, you can always find new leaps in productivity by focusing on the 20% of the 20% yielding 80% of the 80% of the results. It never stops!

Perform from your strengths! There can hardly be a more effective success principle than this one.

The book is very tiny – you can read it in 1-2 hours. But it has had a profound impact on my life. After reading it, I decided to quit my job and focus 100% on business because I discovered that I didn’t need a corporate environment to reach success and I didn’t need a boss either.

Only after reading Druckers' “Perform from your strengths” principle I gave myself permission to do just that – and it changed things quickly for me.

Writers often struggle to think of themselves as “writers” because the world has us believing that we can only carry that title if we are successfully published, and of course words such as “success” and even “published” can be fraught with subjective controversy. One of the lessons I learned from Brenda Ueland, among other great thinkers, is that we need to focus first on our own authenticity and only much, much later dare we think about what the world might have to say. This allowed me to let go and move on and trust myself on my writing path. It wasn’t easy, but as emphasized in If You Want to Write, we will be all right if we believe in our inner richness.  

When researching the newspaper angle of my book, I was already aware of the exploits of Nellie Bly, the New York-based pioneer of investigative, undercover journalism. But I wanted to try and track down a journalist who had achieved similar feats in late Victorian and Edwardian London. Enter Elizabeth Banks, an American journalist who emigrated to London at the turn of the century, and plied her trade as a freelancer, selling exposes on the lives of parlour maids, laundry workers, and flower sellers to the likes of The Illustrated London News. Pluck doesn’t even come close to covering her bravery and bravado – some memorable details from her book include her smuggling a camping stove into a London hotel because she couldn’t afford the dining room food, and pestering editors up and down Fleet Street to publish her words.
