This book surprised me. I only picked it up because it was on display at the library and it covered the time period of a couple of Shakespeare plays I've seen, Richard II and Henry IV Part 1. It turned out to provide a fascinating portrait of those two men from childhood to manhood (and kinghood), and a clear picture of European geopolitics in the fourteenth century (one of the most interesting centuries in history). I was also surprised by how fragile the life of the nobility felt, with children effectively held hostage for their parents, or sent abroad to marry when they would still be in primary school in our time, or orphaned because of the political wranglings. An eye-opening book.

**THE TELEGRAPH'S BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024**

'A glorious work of history... a gripping and haunting tragedy... There was no book published this year, novels included, that I found richer in character; no plot more taut' - Tom Holland, The Spectator

'A dazzling tour de force of epic royal history: a compulsive, unputdownable real-life thriller, a gripping portrait of ruthless power politics, and a study of British tyranny ... written with the delicacy and elegance of one of Britain's most brilliant historians at the top of her game' - Simon Sebag-Montefiore

Graphic novels can sometimes do things that text novels can't, and this book uses that ability from the first page, when you appear to be in an office, but it turns out to be only the main character's perception of the situation. This is a very sad book, where the main character is fighting against something that can't be fought - dementia. There are a number of interesting characters. One of them seems like a wrong-un, but after experiencing his life for a while you have more sympathy for his approach to it. This isn't the first book I've read from the perspective of a dementia sufferer (Still Alice is very good) but it was a fresh take on it.

Admitted to a home for the elderly because he suffers from Alzheimer's disease, for Ernest community life feels like an ordeal. But soon he accepts his new environment and decides to fight to escape from giving in to his awful destiny. For the author, the human community is like a library where books are piled up in mountains populated by yellowing paper of dreams and fantasies.

Book cover of Good Neighbors

Elle Mitchell Author Of Our Tragedy

From my list on the secrets your neighbors keep.

Why am I passionate about this?

I’m drawn to stories about the human experience in the throes of extreme situations. When I was younger, I lived on a military base. I remember hearing snippets of life through the walls of our duplex, seeing things through open windows in our cul de sac. Of course, it wasn’t all sinister, but I was impacted. Secrets and how people cope with trauma are a common theme throughout my work, and I seek out stories with them as a focus. Books that deep-dive into characters and their lives will always make the top of my list!

Sarah Langan tells you the story of a crime on Maple Street in layers, peeling back the lives of the residents there. While it may seem like a regular suburb, nothing is quite as it seems. Secrets are almost the lifeblood of the street. With news snippets, dissertations, and articles, along with the traditional narrative, the novel immerses the reader into the world Sarah Langan created. But the most impressive part is how trapped the temperature, the very environment itself, makes you feel. Unable to escape that, even the fairly benign secrets of Maple Street feel heavy.

Neighbors. We’ve all got ‘em, right? We believe we’re the good ones, and we pray we don’t live next door to the bad ones… but sometimes it’s inevitable that we share our property lines with those ill-suited for neighborly behavior. Horror books about bad neighbors are the perfect window into our own communities. We can peer into the lives of others without worry of getting caught. We can tiptoe through their rooms and rummage through their drawers… Who knows what we might find. Are they witches? Serial killers? Devil worshippers? Only their dirty laundry will tell.

So few books give me chills, but I could feel my temperature downright drop the deeper into this graphic novel I went. Certainly not for the weak-hearted, or stomached for that matter, Powell and Schechter plunge into one of the most depraved characters of the Midwest… none other than Ed Gein himself. There is an odd beauty to the madness at display here. It just goes to show you never know what’s going on behind the closed doors of your next-door neighbors.

Clay McLeod Chapman Why Clay loves this book

Samson’s one and only novel, The Auctioneer is a wonderfully unnerving tale of how a community can find itself completely hollowed out in a matter of a single devil’s bargain. Predating Stephen King’s Needful Things, this book is a literary garotte that slowly closes around the reader’s throat. The paranoia is palpable in these pages, believe me.

Book cover of The Last House on Needless Street

Owen W. Knight Author Of They Do Things Differently Here

From my list on books that conjure up a sense of place.

Why am I passionate about this?

I write speculative fiction books that feature hidden or secret locations. I enjoy writing about closed communities where different rules apply, and they are less susceptible to outside intervention. Places where those in power can ‘get away with things’. I base the topography on real locations and adapt them for my purposes. I can visualise the locations, which are an amalgam of the real and the imaginary. For consistency, I draw maps incorporating real physical landmarks.

When in unfamiliar settings, people often feel isolated. This makes it easier to portray them as exposed or insecure, creating an atmosphere of fear or suspicion and opening up plot possibilities.

Owen's book list on books that conjure up a sense of place

Owen W. Knight Why Owen loves this book

I was intrigued by how the author creates such a strong sense of place in a single house in a story told mostly by the reclusive owner, Ted, and his cat, a man suspected of the abduction and murder of a child.

I loved the tricks, traps, and changes of direction and the slow revelation of what is really happening. When you eventually discover the truth, it comes as no surprise; the fun is in the journey and the cat’s observations of Ted.

A story where psychology is the key. To say more would be risking spoilers.

I love it because I cackled all the way through it. This book encourages its readers to embrace your inner witch! It is witty, scary, and filled with the paranormal that I love! I cheered as the heroine discovered her groove, so to speak.

I love stories about insecure women who gain strength and evolve, probably because that happened to me. It’s just an all-around fun read that urges women to stand up and be themselves.
