Technically another Dean Koontz re-read, "Lightning" is one of the more unique time-travel stories I have read ... and the tricky part is, I cannot explain the exact nature of its uniqueness without giving spoilers.

Overall, the story follows a girl, later a woman, named Laura who has something of a "guardian angel" watching over her for much of her life. The tricky part is, her guardian doesn't always show up when she needs him. Who is he? Is he even real? And why does he help her? (But only some of the time?)

These are questions even the reader must ask, as we follow said guardian's side of the narrative without getting a clear picture of him ... until Koontz is ready for his big twist! Check it out; it's well worth your time.

Christopher Andrews Why Christopher loves this book

I've read many takes on Superman, and Kurt Busiek's "Superman: Secret Identity" is one of my all-time favorites. The concept of a "real-life" Clark Kent -- who, because of his name, is constantly barraged by endless Superman-themed gifts and/or jokes -- suddenly developing Superman-like super powers and trying to navigate how he wants to use them ... it's like experiencing many boys' dreams vicariously.

The story follows Clark from his teen years up through to retirement, and -- in spite of its fantastical premise -- it feels consistently grounded. The desire to help while struggling with the fear of discovery is what "Secret Identity" is all about. HIGHLY recommended for fans of the genre.

What is this book about?

What's in a name? Everything, if you share it with the Man of Steel! Superman: Secret Identity collects the critically lauded, 4-issue, Prestige Format mini-series written by Kurt Busiek (JLA/Avengers, Astro City) with stellar art by Stuart Immonen (Superman: End of the Century, Thor). Set in the real world, Secret Identity examines the life of a young Kansas man with the unfortunate name of Clark Kent. All Clark wants is to be a writer, but his daily life is filled with the taunts and jibes of his peers, comparing him to that other Clark Kent - the one with super-powers.…

C.T. Phipps Author Of The Rules of Supervillainy

From my list on superheroes not from Marvel or DC.

Why am I passionate about this?

Hi, my name is CT Phipps, and I am a crazy nerd from Ashland, Ky. I'm married with two dogs and love superheroes. I mean love. I used to wallpaper my bedroom wall with Spider-Man comics in their polybags. I've been a lifelong superhero fan and just love all the melodrama, hilarity, and weird science as well as magic that are the undercurrents of the genre. I've never lost my love of the characters and their stories, so when the MCU first came out, I ended up writing this book as well as its sequels. I’ve also written a bunch of other humorous sci-fi/fantasy books but this is the series closest to my heart.

C.T.'s book list on superheroes not from Marvel or DC

C.T. Phipps Why C.T. loves this book

Superheroes and zombies seem like a terrible combination, but Peter Clines makes a fascinating story of zombies destroying the Earth but for a collection of superhero guarded survivors.

It's a bit like The Walking Dead combined with the Justice League, though the power level of the people involved is closer to Marvel's street level. The first book has some crass jokes that get dropped from the sequels but not enough that I didn't enjoy it. I have to say my favorite characters are Saint George (a Superman analog) and Stealth (a female Batman).

Book cover of World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War

Janice Hardy Author Of Understanding Show, Don't Tell: And Really Getting It

From my list on novels that show and don’t tell.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love 'Show, Don’t Tell' because it really brings a novel to life for the reader. It’s something so many writers struggle with, but it can turn a so-so novel into one readers can’t put down. Losing yourself in a story is the sign of great writing, and when a writer can show me what’s in their head and do it in a way that makes me forget I’m reading, well, that’s a book that keeps me turning the pages until it’s done. And that’s my favorite part of reading, writing, and teaching writing.

Janice's book list on novels that show and don’t tell

Janice Hardy Why Janice loves this book

This book is one of my all-time favorites, because even though I knew it was fiction, it felt like nonfiction as I was reading it. It was that authentic, and that alive. I truly felt like I was reading an actual history book about an event from my own world.

The narrative structure was also amazing, telling the entire story through interviews with survivors of the zombie war, and I was riveted by those stories. They showed me what it was like to face that zombie horror, which made me desperate to know what happened, how they survived, and how they managed. Although I was reading, it felt like I was watching actual people tell their tales.

Book cover of The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead

Steven J. Kirsh Author Of Parenting in the Zombie Apocalypse: The Psychology of Raising Children in a Time of Horror

From my list on surviving a zombie apocalypse.

Why am I passionate about this?

Like many of my generation, my formal introduction to the zombie genre started with George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Stories of the zombie apocalypse, and the arterial sprays, dismemberments, and eviscerations that accompanied it, have fascinated me ever since. But, I'm also a psychology professor. Although I was initially captivated by the carnage of the undead, I quickly found that the mindsets of the survivors were equally fascinating. More than anything, I love seeing how fictional worlds represent real-world psychological concepts.

Max Brooks' offering is a fascinating "how-to guide" for living in a world overrun with the living dead. Book cover of I Am Legend

Stefan Bogdanski Author Of All the Shadows

From my list on apocalypse being dark times, but it‘s not the end (and might be fun, too).

Why am I passionate about this?

I‘ve been thinking about the forces that drive humanity together and pull us apart at the same time since my late teens; back then, I started reading the classical dystopian tales. The (perceived) end of time always speaks to me, because I think it‘s in those moments of existential dread that we learn who we really are. That‘s why I like reading (and reviewing) books, and also why those topics are an undertone in my own writings. I do hope you enjoy these 5 books as much as I have.

Stefan's book list on apocalypse being dark times, but it‘s not the end (and might be fun, too)

Stefan Bogdanski Why Stefan loves this book

I‘ve always been fascinated by the dividing line between human and monster. Because, what is a monster?

I know, this kind of question will usually get a quick answer, but I have been thinking about this particular question for quite some time now. I am Legend revolves around this question, and I love it for that. I also love it for the somewhat unexpected twist in the end, and that one can be interpreted as an answer.

Anyway, for me, this book got me thinking about morale and ethics and other stuff. I just like it when a book gets me to that point where I think: wait a moment, but what if…?

Book cover of Night Film

Simon Avery Author Of PoppyHarp

From my list on fictions within fiction.

Why am I passionate about this?

PoppyHarp has at its heart the mystery of a forgotten children’s TV show from the 70s, so I wanted to share books that explore a similar idea–the fiction in fiction–be it an invented book, movie, or TV show that drives the narrative in some way. These five books all feature the enigmatic quality of something lost or some kind of age-old mystery waiting to be unraveled by its protagonists. They are also five books that I absolutely adore.

Simon Avery Why Simon loves this book

I absolutely fell for and into this seductive and sublimely entertaining book about a journalist investigating the enigma of Stanislas Cordova, an infamous and reclusive horror movie director. Nobody knows where he is or even if he’s still alive.

The invention of Cordova’s legend in the book is inspired; I love how Pessl builds layers of fake pop culture references and internet rabbit holes that feel so real you can almost hear the flicker of celluloid of one of Cordova’s movies playing out in your head. Even years after reading this book, I still recall it vividly in my mind’s eye.

James Schannep Why James loves this book

You’d probably be forgiven if when you think of poetry you think of love, natural beauty, or at worst, melancholic sadness. But with just 17 syllables, the author manages to bring all the grit, gore, and mayhem of the zombie apocalypse into pleasant verse. Haiku is a popular, easily approachable form of poetry (i.e. not pretentious), which makes this book a fun, light read despite its blood-spattered pages.

Poetry is dead. "Zombie Haiku" is the touching story of a zombie's gradual decay told through the intimate poetry of haiku. From infection to demise, readers will accompany the narrator through deserted streets and barracaded doors for every eye-popping, gut-wrenching, flesh-eating moment. The book is illustrated with over 50 photos from the zombie's point of view and designed with extra blood, pus, gore, and guts!

Anastasia's book list on the absurdities of the workplace

Anastasia Ryan Why Anastasia loves this book

It might seem strange that this outrageous and thoroughly enjoyable comedy wound up on my list of workplace comedies.

In the original version of Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet was stuck in a Regency-era comedy of manners. Her only choice of life “careers” was “wife.”

Grahame-Smith has taken Austin’s words and turned this classic upside down by giving her a very important job—Zombie Killer.

It’s a hilarious take on the power of women, and, strangely enough, adding a Zombie apocalypse has made some of the characters’ motivations much more understandable.

Elizabeth’s workplace is her small village in England, and, always on call, she has lots of work to do.

I loved this book, and I think Austin would have, too. It’s my kind of humor.
