Elizabeth Hopkinson Why Elizabeth loves this book

I picked up this book, partly because of the queer/BIPOC representation, and partly because I love the Golden Age of Sail (and mermaids!) I'd previously read Maggie Tokuda-Hall's short story "Shark Week" in Mermaids Never Drown, so it was great to read a full-length novel by the same author. I feel this book does something really original with mermaids - and witches, and pirates - as well as telling a great story about love and friendship.

Elizabeth Hopkinson Why Elizabeth loves this book

I bought this at a book sale, which is why I didn't get Volume 1 (it wasn't there). But I've wanted to get into the Sad Ghost Club since I first heard about it. I felt so seen! As a young person, I described myself as following my crush around, "like a sad, little ghost" and had no friends at uni, writing in my diary that I needed a "Sad, Pathetic No-Mates Club". I wish this book and its series had existed back then.

I think Socks' experience of thinking their friend won't want them if they have another friend is so relatable, and the portrayal of depression is so accurate. It's such a gentle, uplifting book.
