11 Books Like End Game

Mairwen is the geeky girl who hides in the corner of all events. Lord Ronson Cadogan needs an heir and is ready to choose one. Maiwen is not on his radar at all.

I bought this book from Kathryn Moon at Writer's on the River. My daughter loves her stories and I decided to try one. I fell into this story. I like shy smart Mairwen. I like grumpy Ronson. More I thoroughly enjoyed Moon's writing style. Her characters are well developed and her world is vivid and has depth.

Moon created a story which drew me in and held my attention. She created main characters who I liked but also secondary characters who filled in the cast nicely - whether good guys or not. Dante is a grey character... sort of. He protects his own. He's willing to take on the seedier side of New Orleans including drug dealers and organized crime. He had a rough childhood and now he keeps everyone but his four brothers at arm's length. Until Mila walks in looking for a job. Mila is hiding. She keeps everyone at a distance and keeps to herself but Dante noticed her and wants her. She's his employee so she's off limits. At least until people start trying to kill her. Then Dante's all over making sure she's safe.

Hackett has created some shady brothers. They can get their hands dirty but fall on the right side of the line of right and wrong. This story is well paced and written. I had to throw this series in because it ties in with the author’s Dark & Dirty Sinners MC Series and is sooo frickin’ good!

It revolves around three crime families and the women they will do anything to keep, all while trying to take each other out.

It’s so damned good, and when read in tandem with my first recommendation, the world-building and intrigue are incredible.

As shocking as I felt Kubrick’s film was, I think the book is possibly more startling. Some scenes Kubrick played for laughs are described as violent and sadistic in the novel. If, like me, you are a fan of the film, it’ll fill in some blanks for you. Ever wonder why Alex and his friends drink milk?

The book is written in futuristic teen-speak that did take me a while to get my head around, but this ultimately adds to the strangeness of the insular world these ‘droogs’ inhabit. Though it was first published in 1962, I think this is still a very relevant and unflinching look at the place of violence in society.

If I were ever to face a zombie apocalypse, I would want Mercy Thompson by my side. Mercy is a scrappy coyote shifter, and despite often being physically outmatched by the myriad supernatural creatures surrounding her, it is her intelligence, independence, and resourcefulness that truly sets her apart for me. I also just love that she is a mechanic, as Patty has taken that gender expectation and turned it on its head. 

I adore that when Mercy believes in something, she stands her ground, no matter the consequences. Her unwavering moral compass and fierce loyalty make her an awesome heroine. In a world filled with chaos, Mercy Thompson is the kind of fierce female companion every reader would be fortunate to have. And as I said, I totally call dibs on her for the apocalypse. 

This book was given to me as a gift, and the lessons it taught me as I read those ancient pages.

It had me clutching my pearls, and it disgusted me at other parts, but at the same time, I wanted/needed to read that book in order to write a book in that style. 

He’s heir to a violent legacy. She’s on the hunt for a story that’ll launch her career from Page Six to the six o’clock hour. When their paths cross, she knows she’ll follow this lead anywhere. I love it because Miller’s really good at writing dark romance. It’s a tricky genre to get right because of the subject matter, but if you can nail it you get a sort of grim satisfaction from the underworld justice. But then one has to ask: what happens when someone comes around asking questions? What happens when emotions get in the way of objectivity or professionalism? And what do you do when someone you’re falling for is revealed to be a monster amongst monsters?

This dark romance with an enemies-to-lover trope with two serial killers. I realize this isn't everyone's jam, but it's mine. I like crime and romance mixed together. If you have triggers like stalking, kidnapping, mutilation, and such, I suggest this is not a book for you.

The main male character, Cole Blackwell, and the leading female, Mara, are both artists, another plus for me since I love art and used to be an art professor. He's wealthy, and she's a struggling artist living on the edge. He barely feels anything; initially, he doesn't seem to have a beating heart. When he finds Mara bleeding in a woody area, he actually steps over her and keeps walking. Mara, in contrast, feels everything profoundly.

Serena Akeroyd is the absolute goddess of MC books, as far as I’m concerned. They’re gritty, sexy, hardcore, and totally believable. I went through this series ravenously and then everything else she’s ever written.

My favorite thing about her books is though all her characters are deeply flawed, they are all redeemable, even when they don’t think so themselves. The women especially aren’t there just to lift the men up; they’re fully-fledged characters in their own right, working through their own issues.

And this would be the "oh my!"

Sky Warren is another author whose books I absolutely devour. The sex is incredibly hot, the men are all morally grey, and the women have problems of their own.

This series will have you clutching your pearls in all the best of ways.
