This was not the type of book I usually read or listen to. I’d seen a recommendation somewhere and it sounded intriguing. I could feel the emotions the characters felt by how their actions and dialogue were written. And the house was described in such detail, I could hear the creaks and groans of the old wood. As the main character remembered what really happened years before, I was drawn into her emotions. Yes, I cried. Several times! And another amazing narrator who knew exactly when to pause and when to rush as the characters did.

This was very hard to pick. Any book by Rachel Grant or Toni Anderson could go here, but I picked The Buried Hours because of the way the main character handled her situation. Have you ever done something and completely forgotten what happened or trusted someone who put you in danger? This character had so much stuff going on and basically she was on her own because of the entire trust issues. She was amazing! And the location in a national park? Perfect!

I love the variety of stories and characters created by the different contributors to the anthology. The stories range from historical fantasy to epic fantasy to far future science fiction. And the characters that populate those worlds are fantastic! I want so many of these short stories to be expanded into full novels. I will definitely be looking for more publications by all of these authors.

Rien Gray has created a fascinating world, one populated by women and nonbinary knights, sorceresses, witches, Goddesses, and dragons. The writing is immersive and lyrical; I could feel the rain, smell the trees. And the relationship between Seure (they/them) and Ganeida (she/her) is simultaneously sweet and sensual. I loved this book so much that I immediately purchased the rest of the series. [Note: take the content warnings seriously!]
