It's book five, the grand finale in a western series that I wish would go on forever.
The main character, Hector Martin, is a good, old-fashioned hero. He's daring, adventuresome, and there's not much he can't overcome. Still, the frontier throws plenty of trouble his way. While this character takes center stage, what I love about this book and the series is the focus on family. The wilderness itself feels like a character in the series.
If you love frontier and pioneer fiction, mountain man stories, classic westerns, or gripping adventures, like me, this book/series is for you.
And, it has a buffalo on the cover! So, I knew I'd love it.
The only treasure in this land is water...Running from an Indian war party, Heck hunkers down in a cluster of boulders sheltering the only water for miles—and several strangers awaiting the impending siege. Here, Heck will make his stand, facing not only the war party but also danger from within. Because as temperatures rise and water dwindles, the deadly forces of fear, greed, and stubborn pride pit him against the very people he’s fighting to save.Heck’s Stand is a classic Western with a touch of romance. It’s perfect for fans of C.J. Petit and R.O. Lane.“John Deacon writes the kind of…

This wholesome young family's story is captivating.
There are loads of heartaches and disasters along the way. A tragic separation early in the book was hard to overcome. The plot took unexpected twists and turns. Then, the book had a very satisfying end, which I can't say too much about for fear of spoiling the story.
It reminded me of Little House on the Prairie, with its values and focus on family. Only, this is farther west, a bit later in time, and more dramatic. I love stories that showcase surviving the hardships on the frontier. This installment was my favorite in the series, and I'm hoping there's plenty more on the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed this heartwarming historical novel.
