100 Books Like Authority in Prayer

Current events have caused people everywhere to become abruptly aware of the existence of good and evil, and the forces that influence our daily lives.

Derek Prince explains the reality of the forces and the power of blessings and curses in a way that is not “spooky.” He has helped me literally take command over many life adversities that I thought I had to accept as part of life and take hold of the hope for my future God intends.

As a Christian, I’ve been frustrated by the lack of demonstrations of faith in our day compared to the early Church.

Jesus said Believers after Him would do greater works than He did, (John 14:12-14), so why don’t we see evidence of the Believer’s authority and power, especially in these current evil days, when we need Christ’s solutions? As Dr. Kraft reveals, it’s because we are unaware of the authority and power we have in Christ.

Clearly satan has successfully prevented Christians from knowing the full extent of the authority and power they have. The Church has been marginalized because we’ve accepted wrong teachings. This book has helped me redirect my frustrations and experience increasing victories in my everyday life and will you too.

I read this book during the longest and most painful time in my life.

I’d been a faithful Christian, even volunteering about 30 hours each week for 9 months each year for several years, serving as the teacher for a local women’s Bible study. I couldn’t understand why I was experiencing so much pain and devastation.

This book was the one that helped me understand, tribulation is a tool of God that prepares Christians to be used by Him. And now some 30 years later, I can look back and see that very painful, extended time, was used by God for my good and all His glory as I now reach an international audience with my books and podcast.

After making it through the difficult extended season of life, I needed to regroup.

The “Ten Keys” the author presents are to unlock the Kingdom of God within each one of us to embrace our God-given purpose. “Start, vision, goals, courage, teamwork, excellence, the ability to fail, perseverance, joy, and giving it all away” provided not only ten keys to success, but a path forward.

Anyone who leads and works closely with others will benefit from this book which helps us capture God’s vision, know our mission, and helps others replicate the process. Any person who is struggling to stretch an area of his or her life in a positive direction is a peak performer if we simply stay engaged in the process.

Live a Praying Life is, hands-down, my top pick when it comes to making a study of prayer. Jennifer Kennedy Dean understands that we want to know the “why” and the “how” behind prayer, and she tackles the thorny questions to equip us to persevere when it doesn’t look like the needle is moving. In looking at the lives of folks who’ve gone through more than a few tricky places (guys like Joseph, who thought he was supposed to be a ruler but wound up being sold as a slave), Dean warns us not to mistake God’s will for his ways, or confuse what he is doing with how he is doing it. We only see part of the picture. Mark Batterson writes, “If you press into God’s presence like never before, you will experience God like never before.” This small book has led me back to a richer prayer life again and again. I’ve prayed through it many times and have given away countless copies to others. Each day Batterson invites a new way to look at prayer and a practical way to start a morning devotion time all grounded in scripture. As a writer I love the focus on creativity and honoring ideas. He writes, “I don’t type on a keyboard, I pray on one.”

I read relatively short sections of this book at a time because I would get an overwhelming desire to pray. In fact, it was during a prayer that was prompted while reading this book that I had one of my most profound encounters with God. 

Every morning in my prayer time, I pray, talk, and listen to God through this wonderful 365-day journey of Scripture-based prayers that draw you closer to the One who loves you perfectly. Often, the prayers written reflect exactly what I am going through and enhance the words that I can say to God to comfort me and encourage me as I walk in step with my Lord.

The book has many prayers of peace, joy, and hope, as they will guide you in your daily walk with Christ.   

If all the other books I’ve recommended are like going on a good spiritual retreat, I Heard God Laugh is like hanging out at a backyard barbecue with your favorite neighbor. That’s not to say that Matthew Kelly isn’t a spiritual master (he is), but he writes in a colloquial, friendly style, preferring personal anecdotes and homey little parables over explicit callbacks to Scripture and other Christian mystics. That’s not to say his approach isn’t solidly rooted in the Christian tradition; it is, but here his aim is to encourage the reluctant pray-er by stripping away anything that might get in the way and offering lots of encouragement. Kelly’s approach is most similar to my own; we both have a heart for helping people to begin their conversation with God. As he says, “Once the conversation has begun, it can lead anywhere.”

Eugene Peterson writes, “Morning prayer anticipates the day in hope.” This gentle book of Psalms and prayers is a gem. Each day has just a few sentences from Eugene Peterson to take me deeper into the Psalm or scripture passage. The thoughts are reassuring and peaceful, helping me start the day with a focus on God.
