I have loved stories since before I could read, and writing is a wonderful way to share that joy with others. Such a charming book, I could recite almost all of Madeline with its fun, memorable rhyming.
I wanted to be Madeline and live in her world of Paris, have her dog Genevieve, and (to my mother’s dismay) walk along the top edge of a bridge, balancing like an acrobat!
Returning to this book as an adult, I didn’t realize that the author was actually the illustrator as well, and I found that the unique illustrations brought the story to life. Madeline helps children see the world in a different way, with imagination, whimsy, and creativity.
I also had a Madeline sticker book, and returned to her fun story again and again (not to mention watching the TV show regularly).

This is such a charming children’s book, one of my favourites as a child, that I would read again and again.
I remember being captivated by the beautiful illustrations and feeling myself just like the princess as she searches for the fairy who lost her bag of jewels. There are also sparkly stickers included that can be used to decorate the pages, and stickers are a MUST for kids!

Jillian Jiggs is a fun girl whom I could relate to so much as a child. She dresses up, makes her own stories, and sometimes makes a mess!
My friends and I loved to play similar activities as Jillian, making crafts and using everything in my house and dress-up trunk to create stories where we were princesses, witches, fairies, and more.
The rhyming in the book drew me into the story and meant that returning to the book became more memorable as the rhymes stuck in my mind.

Barbie books were also a favourite of mine, and the story of the twelve dancing princesses is a fun adventure with twelve sisters (I would have loved twelve sisters!) who love to dance.
When they venture to a magical world, I can imagine dancing in a gorgeous dress along with them! One thing I love about Barbie books is that they are empowering for girls, showing Barbie (or her fairytale counterpart) taking the lead and making a difference in the world.
Although the Barbie rendition is not quite like the classic tale, it is a great way for kids to be introduced to old fairy tales.

I am a former primary teacher, now a gardener and more recently an author of children’s books–maths features heavily in my writing! My love of maths began when I started teaching it and really took off when I explored maths alongside the concept of Growth Mindsets. Through much study I found that the majority of children can access a good level of maths by adopting a Growth Mindset. I’ve been fascinated by the park for years, ever since I started visiting it daily to do shinrin-yoku, or Japanese “forest-bathing,” there. I wanted to learn everything about it through first-hand experiences, through guides on its flora and fauna, and through historical sources. The park is the heart of Manhattan, and I wanted to learn what makes it beat. After living, breathing, and studying the park for a good long while, the diary I had started taking on my experiences there eventually grew into a book-length poem about it. That book would never have happened without inspiration from and the information in the books on this list.
I was lucky to receive this book as a gift from a friend. Still, gorgeous as the photographs in it are, it is more than a coffee-table book.
I had known Sara Cedar Miller’s photography beforehand, but in this book, she distinguishes herself as a historian as well. I could only admire the depth of her knowledge about the original plan for the park and how deftly she fits the Victorian-era elements into it.
But the park I love is a living and ever-evolving museum of architecture and botany, and Miller is up as well on more recently added environments such as the Hallett Nature Sanctuary and Rhododendron Mile.

I’ve loved children’s books for as long as I can remember. When I became a Kindergarten teacher, I often used children’s books to springboard lessons and activities with my class. As a child and then as a secondary school history teacher, I wanted to help people understand each other. I always told my students that it was less important to memorize dates and facts than it was to explore history to help them understand what it is to be a human being. They should know that humans have always faced challenges and found good or bad ways of dealing with them–it is not just in their time. The books I have listed here on the Revolutionary history of the New York area created an even greater passion for understanding the human condition.
