100 Books Like Aiko and the Planet of Dogs

I instantly fell in love with Bloop, the tiny, power-hungry pug.

Tara Lazar is always clever and hilarious. Her observation (through Bloop’s eyes) of who’s actually in charge of Earth, the people or the dogs, created an interesting premise for a unique story when paired with the intergalactic setting. Mike Boldt’s illustrations are expressive and energetic.

This book was a ton of fun to read out loud. Finding funny voices for all the over-the-top characters was easy and made the kids laugh.

I love Lucy Ruth Cummins’ dry humor.

A "dog" walking around on two legs and acting appalled by typical dog behavior is so silly. I found myself laughing at Stephen and his guest going about their day, and then crying when it was time for his guest to say goodbye.

Cummins is also such a talented illustrator. Her timing and point of view are impeccable, her books are always some of my favorites.

This book packs so much story into so few words!

I found the short, rhyming phrases unpredictably hilarious. I found that the length of the book made it perfect for that one last book before bedtime (I can get through it in just a couple minutes) or for newly independent readers who want to read the book themselves. The dog main character is so endearing, I fell in love with him immediately.

I enjoyed how playful and silly this book was.

Simply put, my baby is obsessed with this book.

She’s still a little too young for actual picture books but loves board books. Anything with lift flaps is a huge hit. Where’s the Astronaut? does one better, it has lift flaps and a mirror! The flaps are made of felt which makes them extra durable. I’ve been fueling my little girl’s love of space from birth, so this board book was a must. I love the bold, geometric art style and all the big, smiling characters (including a space dog!).

When we get to the page with the mirror, she likes to lean in, almost touching her nose to the page, and giggle at her reflection in the book.

Epic sci-fi with a cast of Earth-protecting animals.

Star Beasts is told through the POV of Bandit, the newest captain on the team, so we get to learn the ropes along with him (perfect way to tell a story, eh?). It’s as rad as it is cute. Alien animals!

Ancient relic collecting! Stinky lemurs! And if you’re anything like me, you will absolutely geek out when you see the Novataur.

I first read this book in self-pubbed form when I met the creators at WonderCon a few years ago. Nicest people on earth, coolest vision for their work, hilarious merch.

Also, Allyson is a fellow gardener, which is maybe not important to mention here, but it makes me happy.

Lopside the Barkonaut is sure to make you smile. Humanity needs to find a new planet to live on, and the Barkonauts go along to ensure the best qualities of both humans and dogs survive.

Voyage of the Dogs is a middle-grade book (ages 10+) but completely enjoyable for dog lovers of all ages. Disaster strikes when the human astronauts disappear – are they dead? – and the Barkonauts have to figure out stuff for themselves. 

I love that all of these space-faring dogs have flaws and a past history that they have to carry around. Lopside discovers that some of his fellow Barkonauts are nothing like what they seem. Despite all the obstacles, eventually, there is a wonderful outcome that will bring you joy for a long time after you finish reading. Read it for yourself – or even better, read it to a kid who needs strength and… show more.

The first time I read it—and yes, there have been a few times—I could not put this book down.

Romy Silvers is the only crew member to survive an accident during interstellar travel, and she’s got the trauma to prove it. Her only communication with other people is by email. At first, she’s ecstatic when she finds out another ship has been sent to join her. But then the messages from Earth start getting weird.

The author does a brilliant job of casting doubt as to how much of what’s going on is real—and how much is in Romy’s head. I wouldn’t have thought being alone in space could be so terrifying, but the tension and feeling of creeping dread did not stop until the ending—which left me reeling.

From the time he was young, Edward White loved outer space and dreamed of traveling there. In simple poetic language, this book tells how Edward’s life led him to serve in the U.S. Air Force and ultimately in the NASA program, where he became the first American to walk in space. Nonetheless, the book emphasizes that while he was always reluctant to stop doing anything related to outer space, he was eager to return from his journey to spend time with his greatest treasure of all—his family! Back matter gives more details about White’s life and a timeline of his accomplishments.

On Take Your Kid To Work Day, Jillian is thrilled that she gets to go to space with her parents. The routine trip goes terribly wrong, their shuttle crashes, and Jillian has to figure out how to survive – and save her injured parents – with only her own ingenuity and the help of a sarcastic, TV-loving AI nanobot swarm called SABRINA. 

The bantering Jillian-Sabrina relationship is the highlight of the book, and Jillian is a pitch-perfect MG protagonist. It was a delight to read about a super anxious kid solving problems in the absolute worst of situations. 

The Aliens: Primarily, a very creepy parasite – but the descriptions and fictional-science behind all the various life forms on the planet are fantastic.

I recommend this book because it captures everything I love about Arthur C. Clarke, that sense of vast, quiet wonder, where the universe feels enormous and ancient and full of secrets we may never fully understand.

This story of a massive alien craft drifting through our solar system pulled me in with its scale alone, but what stayed with me was the mystery. Clarke never shows you the aliens, just like in 2001: A Space Odyssey, only the technology, the structures, the hints of something far beyond us. I loved that restraint, that feeling of standing at the edge of something we can sense but not grasp.

Readers who enjoy epic, contemplative science fiction will feel right at home here. And it fits my theme because it honors the unknown, the same quiet mystery I explore in my own writing.
