The two female protagonists are unusual; one is a botanical illustrator, and especially well-drawn is Belle, a courtesan and botanical perfumer who has a plan to use her talents to capture a rare flowering succulent to solve her problems.
Unfortunately, plans rarely work out perfectly, but this novel does. A treat for gardeners everywhere.

This book is on many folks’ Best of 2023 list, and for good reason. It’s romantic, funny, and irreverent. And Maehrer birthed it from a TikTok series of short videos. There’s nothing not to like here.

I have been fascinated by historical fiction since childhood, when I used to read historical stories for children by such writers as Rosemary Sutcliffe and Henry Treece, moving on to Dickens and Austen in my early teens. Many of the great books about girls growing up were written in the Victorian and Edwardian periods by e.g. Louisa M Alcott, L M Montgomery, and Laura Ingalls Wilder. I devoured all these since they seemed to take me into a different world. I am a fiction writer rather than a historian since it is the great stories offered by history that spark my passion!

I loved the way Halls skilfully depicts women from different classes. Josephine is a working-class woman who comes straight from prison, whereas Angela Burdett-Coutts is the richest woman in London, but her wealth cages her in a different way. I found this novel beautifully observed, unsentimental, and absorbing.

I can't be the only one to see men with power manipulate their status to hold back others. This isn’t just a Hollywood thing. Fate led me to him, and he connected me with others who shared off-the-record stories of exploitation and ambition. I wanted to tell these tales but not launch yet another bad news book into an already battered world. I aimed to create something accessible and engaging, darkly funny while shining a light on Hollywood's underbelly.
I’ve spoken to people who really couldn’t get into this book, and I consider them somewhat deranged. It’s a rollicking good read, and maybe it helped that I enjoyed the author reading the story, which added to my enjoyment. I’ll go out on a limb and suggest very few authors make great audiobook performers. Mortimer absolutely does, getting the voice of the squirrel spot on.
There’s a strange and convoluted plot set in the not-terribly-underworld of London. A brilliant neighbor part for Kathy Burke should Mortimer ever be fielding Netflix offers. It’s a book you’ll read in days, not weeks. Fast-paced and has me on edge for part two–out in August.
