Myra Johnson Why Myra loves this book

When I read this book several years ago, I was just starting out in my writing career, and I remember thinking, If only someday I could write like this! Lisa Wingate has a beautiful way of eliciting emotion and empathy, of creating scenes and situations so true-to-life that she never fails to draw me in. Like all her books, Tending Roses takes a deeply honest look at human relationships—the good, the bad, and the in-between—and always with an underlying current of faith. Kate’s situation may be different from my own, but I could still relate to her feelings and struggles, her questions and doubts. That resonance—that connection—is what makes any story memorable.

Myra Johnson Why Myra loves this book

This novel is beautifully written, a gentle, faith-filled love story with characters I couldn’t help but care about from the start. Recently widowed and expecting a baby, Jessica is struggling with the tragic loss of her husband and daughter—and the secret knowledge of her late husband’s betrayal. Her new next-door neighbor, Ridley, has his own secrets, which is why he’s attempting to keep a low profile in this small-town setting. I loved watching their friendship evolve into something more and how their faith grew as they dealt with the difficulties they faced. And as a lifelong animal lover, I have to say I was especially fond of Ridley’s dog, Kris, who played the perfect little matchmaker!

Grace Greene writes the ultimate “beach read”—endearing characters, descriptions that put you right there at oceanside, and a poignant blend of emotion and humor. I love how Lilliane, the heroine, discovers courage she never thought she had. A temporary job as a live-in caregiver begins merely as a way to earn money for much-needed home repairs. But her stay in Emerald Isle, NC, becomes a life-changer, not only for her but for the elderly gentleman who soon becomes both friend and mentor. It’s a book about stepping out of your comfort zone and opening your heart to new possibilities no matter your age. And if this novel stirs your heart as it did mine, you won’t want to miss the sequel, A Dancing Tide.

Book cover of Little Women

Kate Christensen Author Of Good Company

From my list on writers being writers.

Why am I passionate about this?

Maybe because I’m a novelist, I’ve always loved reading novels about writers—it’s a joy to see my passionate relationship with my own work reflected in these fictional solitary obsessives, my literary siblings. Reading about their own writing gives me a sense of recognition, community, and solidarity, and makes me feel less alone in this odd vocation, which is no small thing. I can’t get enough fictional evocations of the daily discipline of the writer’s life—as well as the trajectory of a literary career—from adolescence (Jo March) to old age (Leonard Schiller).

Kate's book list on writers being writers

Kate Christensen Why Kate loves this book

I have always loved the image of Jo March hiding up in the attic (she calls it a “garret” because it’s more romantic) of her family’s New England house, munching on russet apples and writing furiously away with her pet rat, Scrabble, as her muse, or curling up with Jane Eyre—it’s the only place she can be alone.

She’s one of the classic aspiring young writers of literature—a totally unconventional, headstrong girl with big ambitions who has provided inspiration for her real-life counterparts for generations, me included.

What is this book about?

Louisa May Alcott shares the innocence of girlhood in this classic coming of age story about four sisters-Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy.

In picturesque nineteenth-century New England, tomboyish Jo, beautiful Meg, fragile Beth, and romantic Amy are responsible for keeping a home while their father is off to war. At the same time, they must come to terms with their individual personalities-and make the transition from girlhood to womanhood. It can all be quite a challenge. But the March sisters, however different, are nurtured by their wise and beloved Marmee, bound by their love for each other and the feminine…

I grew up hearing the stories of my rugged, determined Mennonite ancestors, and my very first published story at the age of 12 was about my Russian Mennonite great-grandparents' escape to Canada. I now write Amish fiction, which is linked to my Anabaptist Mennonite roots, so I have come full circle. I love a really immersive story that pulls me into a completely different world, and these authors are top of their game. I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have!

I love a story that can pull me away from my own stresses and introduce me to brand new fictional ones!

I can be hard to impress at this point in the game, but Jennifer Spredemann is able to pull me into an authentic Amish world and make me feel the environment around me in just a few words.

It’s a short read, so I was able to read it one Sunday morning before I got my day started, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In my opinion, her world-building is second to none!

Patricia Johns Why Patricia loves this book

As a middle-aged woman, I enjoy a romance with more mature characters.

I’m not a young thing anymore, and I’m no longer naïve. I’ve lived a lot, and I’ve known a lot of people who’ve gone through ordeals in relationships. So it’s nice to read a story where the characters have experienced a bit more.

But it’s also a good reminder that no matter how mature we are, love is love! And it can side-swipe the best of us!

With the world spinning out of control these days, I’ve wondered what I would do if the same problems as WW2 erupted again.

This book has one timeline set in WW2, and follows a Mennonite family—some of whom embraced Hitler’s ideologies. My family ancestry is Mennonite, and this story is both shocking and realistic.

It gave me a better understanding of why faith-based groups can slide into hate-filled ideologies without even noticing. And it can happen to the best of us! I think this series is incredibly important.

Patricia Johns Why Patricia loves this book

I love how utterly imperfect all of the characters are in this book.

Amish fiction can err on the side of being too idealistic, but not this book! But each character, as thoroughly unique and flawed as they are, is also incredibly lovable.

The older I get, the more I realize that I’m “the weird one,” and my family is in no way perfect. There is not a lot normal about me, but it’s heartening to read about oddball characters who have depth, heart, and a purpose, too. I could really identify.

Having grown up in a relatively conservative faith community, I can appreciate how hard it can be to get some solid, non-idealistic marriage advice. There is the way things should be, and the way things are.

This book pulls you into the imperfect lives of two sisters… and the older sister, Hen, has a marriage that is falling apart, and she cannot seem to get a good piece of advice for love or money! And her crumbling marriage depends on it.

I spent the whole night wanting to crawl into the book and give her a shake and some solid advice!
