I loved Molly Fitz’s introduction to her series, where a coffee maker hit her character on the head and introduced the ability to hear a multi-named cat speak at the reading of a will. I loved that she shortened the cat’s name to Octo-Cat. Fitz puts the cat in charge, solving the mystery. The main character has challenges with her job, and who can’t relate to those issues?

I love Mulhern’s references to the 70s and a snooty country club entourage. I love the way she describes men and whether they live inside or outside of the lines, capturing their quirks perfectly. That has allowed me to capture the sassy voice of the daughter of madcap Hollywood stars, the outrageous garments worn by a cheerfully fake psychic, and the journey of a brokenhearted chef who can’t quote an adage normally to save her life.
Although I don’t usually read dark fantasy, Charlotte and the Demons has become one of my favorite books.

Nazaré is a charming fable, showcasing the pursuit of justice in an authoritarian world. Kin, a young homeless boy, originally accused of sorcery and forced to flee, eventually leads a band of revolutionaries pitted against their oppressive dictator. His army is made up of delightful misfits, along with a variety of wild animals.
I love the rebels in this parable for the modern world. I loved the author’s snarky comments on the problems with an ex-husband that she can’t seem to shake despite his death. I loved her independent cat, who plays a role in her life, along with her observations about her quirky neighbor, who appears very security conscious and buttoned down in his personal life. I’ve spent my life recreating myself as many times as Madonna. If things aren’t working, I move on to something new. Cassie Neil has psychic gifts and works with the detectives to locate serial killers wherein her ability to tap into the mind of the killer evoked a chilly feeling in me. But often, her ability to see through the murderer’s eyes didn’t ensure sufficient information to prevent the murders and this often took a toll on her emotionally and spiritually. This was a fresh and exciting read though more than often I was filled with dread hoping there wouldn’t be another victim or guessing who the next one might be!
