This book blew me away with an entirely new level of action and adventure!

The characters effortlessly drew you into them. I wanted to shout and cheer and curse all at once! I loved how the storyline took me along for the ride, almost like I was one of the characters. 

The story was so beautifully written that I had no problems following it and couldn’t wait to finish a page so that I could find out what was happening next. I daydreamed and analyzed the depths of the story. I just couldn’t get enough of it!

I would have thought to list another book here, and for sure, there are truly many books to be read that could easily be listed here, and despite that, this is listing Tolkien’s works for a third time; the truth simply stands in my library that his works are simply that great. 

So far be it that the renowned book of The Lord of the Rings be not included. I had been introduced to Tolkien and fantasy’s more serious nature by my dad and grandfather with readings of The Hobbit, and by it, I was already enamored with the world of Middle-earth, as Bilbo was my hero.

When I was around ten years old, I read everything I could get my hands on. This book fell into my mental lap and, though it was intended for an older audience, the puns and wit taught me how funny a fantastical world could be. I mean it has everything: a chameleon (who is actually three people), ghosts, zombies, witch battles, and more puns than you can shake a wand at. The protagonist, Bink, is born without an obvious magical talent, which is illegal in Xanth so he is exiled to Mundania where he is captured by an outcast wizard who wants to use him to invade Xanth. Written in the late 1970s, the book is a little dated but still immensely entertaining and the first of many Xanth books. It’s truly a cornucopia of wordplay.

I was overwhelmed by this crazy, lovable, frightening novel. It fit right in with my paranormal/horror bend when I read it many years ago, and it provoked my interest in writing a few titles in the genre.

It fits the unique, quirky character theme perfectly with a first person narrative by a young, charismatic fry cook-writer-memoirist named Odd (real name) Thomas with a sixth sense, able to see demons when they arrive just before tragedy occurs. Yowza. His accomplice is his girlfriend and love interest, aptly named Stormy, who is not similarly gifted and seems to have more common sense than Odd.

When I learned that this novel and the epic series that followed were, in fact, a chronicle of the tabletop role-playing adventures by the authors and their friends, it became my introduction to the massive world of Dungeons & Dragons.

That such creativity and imagination could be sparked by playing a game was a life-altering event that propelled me not only to play it but would eventually inspire me to write my own book series.

A classic tale of heroism and adventure, the original Dragonlance Chronicles perfectly blends all the best qualities of high fantasy, including some well-timed moments of humor that had me genuinely laughing out loud.

I’ve always had a fascination with prophecies and the ubiquitous role they play in works of fantasy—it’s a tried-and-true literary device, and I don’t think there is another series that embodies the principle of fate better than Eddings’ Belgariad series.

The title of this first book sets that up most perfectly. From the first few pages, I was instantly drawn into this world, which takes the concept of uniquely varied traveling companions to a whole other level.

Not only are the characters all well fleshed out with personalities and motivations that kept me invested the whole way, but the book (and series) was also replete with another thing I love so much about fantasy novels—going on a grand, action-filled journey through numerous, fascinating locations.

I can’t remember if I read WOT or GOT first… but this book was one of my entries into epic fantasy.

It begins with normal people trying to figure out something they can’t fully understand, and fearing being powerless in the face of what’s coming. Jordon really takes his time to slowly build the world, but even then, it feels like it is already established, and it is the reader who is new here.

What made it memorable was the way it balanced massive stakes with human fragility. It explores the theme that power isn’t always just a gift or a curse; it can be a burden that costs the wielders and those who are in orbit of it.

This book took me to places that I never knew existed.

Once I began to read the book, I was drawn into a land of beauty and realism that I could literally see as I read the story. I learned so much about the strengths and weaknesses of a human being. It made me examine my own inner self.

I saw terrible things happening to deep and intense people in the story, and I saw them react in the best and the worst ways. The beauty and pain that Donaldson put into this book were far more than I had expected or been ready to face myself.

“A boy attends a special school as a legacy of his father’s position…” is a fairly standard trope in the realms of fantasy.

In this case, the boy in question is not some prince in disguise or teenager who suddenly discovers a gift for magic. In addition to dealing with the demands of his ranger’s camp, Lasgol must fight back against the hatred his instructors and fellow students demonstrate for his tainted heritage; that of a traitor’s son.

The various ranger disciplines, which take the place of a magic system, are well-defined and an interesting change of pace from more common spell casting.

While this book follows the usual path of introducing the protagonist to his first year of study, with descriptions of classes, his interaction with fellow students, and teachers, the author’s narrative style produces a refreshing take. From the time of Anne McCaffrey and her Pern books, people riding dragons have been a popular trope.

Part of the appeal of this book is that it reads more like historical fiction (although in a different world) than fantasy or even science fiction. The authors don’t spend a lot of time world-building, but drop the reader straight into the narrative where Trysten, a young girl, wants to follow in her father’s footsteps. Unfortunately, he is a dragonrider and, in her society, women cannot and do not ride dragons.

There are a few subtle hints of magic, but it seems to be a natural presence of the environment than obvious sorcery at work. It is obvious that dragons are intelligent, but they also remain something of an enigma to both their riders and the reader.
