Book cover of Fools Rush in

Bethany Crandell Author Of See Jane Snap

From my list on for a hearty laugh.

Why am I passionate about this?

I love to laugh. Quite often it’s at inappropriate times or at someone else’s expense, but either way, it’s a huge part of who I am. Second only to prayer, I find laughter to be the best remedy for a difficult situation. It’s hard to be sad when you’re laughing, and as a writer who puts characters into very challenging positions, that’s always at the forefront of my mind. While readers may not always relate to the exact circumstance my characters are in, they may very well find common ground in the levity they seek when trying to survive it.

Bethany Crandell Why Bethany loves this book

This book was Higgins’ debut and holy moly does it deliver! It’s endearing but not in a sappy way, sweet but not to the point of annoyance, swoony but not in a “I need Lava Soap" way, and most importantly it’s laugh-out-loud funny! Just like her many other books since, her characters are perfectly flawed with makes them beyond relatable and oh-so addictive! A great book to get to know this author!

Book cover of Finlay Donovan Is Killing It

Katie Tietjen Author Of Death In The Details

From my list on mystery books starring kick-butt female sleuths.

Why am I passionate about this?

I grew up on a steady diet of Nancy Drew and Encyclopedia Brown. Then, in a plot twist that surprised exactly no one, I became an English teacher, a librarian (did you know you can recommend books for a LIVING???), and an author. I love books where the sleuth must not only solve the case at hand, but also wrestle with some sort of ongoing personal problem–bonus points if they can simultaneously pull the curtain back on societal issues and make me feel like I’m getting to experience life in a place where I don’t actually live (I’m looking at you, London and L.A.).

Katie's book list on mystery books starring kick-butt female sleuths

Katie Tietjen Why Katie loves this book

I enjoyed being along for this wacky ride as Finlay accidentally gets herself hired as a contract killer, disposes of a body, and navigates the criminal underworld–all while raising her two small children and dealing with her infuriating ex-husband. There’s a love triangle in this book, but the relationship I enjoyed most was the friendship that develops between Finlay and Vero, her former nanny turned partner in crime.

This story is completely absurd, laugh-out-loud funny, and very suspenseful.

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny…

Book cover of Dial A for Aunties

Mary Robinette Kowal Author Of The Martian Contingency

From my list on cozy books pretending to be something else.

Why am I passionate about this?

We are in a time where everything seems fraught, and cozies remind me that there are other paths. I write science fiction and fantasy, a genre known for making things worse. But secretly, I want my books to explore what happens when people talk to one another and make the kinder choice. It’s easy to escalate. But having a book with tension and interest and plot twists, while also making the reader feel secure is much harder. Watching characters in unexpected genres have cozy moments reminds me it’s possible. And also, sometimes you just want a hug from a book.

Mary Robinette Kowal Why Mary loves this book

Doing slapstick in prose is so hard, and this succeeds brilliantly. It's a cozy murder mystery with rom-com flair and is a delight to read. I love the way the family comes together to help one another, even if it’s not always welcomed.

It’s funny and charming and had me laughing out loud. The story has so many ridiculous moments and, at the end of the day, it’s about the strength of the relationships.

Bethany Crandell Why Bethany loves this book

This book has all my very favorite things: irreverent humor, wedding drama, crass women in action (think Bridesmaids), and some hot and spicy lovin’ with a very sexy young man. (Relax, he’s legal…but just barely). Considering this author co-wrote two of my favorite movies: 10 Things I Hate About You, and Legally Blonde, it’s no surprise that this book tops my list.

Ohad's book list on keeping your sanity as a parent

Ohad Ouziel Why Ohad loves this book

Terrible two got its name for a reason. Toddlers are really difficult and this book speaks truth to power letting you know you are not alone facing the little psychotic menace. I wouldn’t use any of the advice in the book – but it is hilarious.

Why should I read it?

1 author picked Toddlers Are A**holes as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Toddler a**holery is a normal part of human development-not unlike puberty, except this stage involves throwing food on the floor and taking swings at people who pay your way in life. For parents of toddlers, the only reasonable (and nonalcoholic) response is to laugh.

Bunmi Laditan's Toddlers Are A**Holes is a hilarious, satirical guide to toddlerhood that give parents instant (and very welcome) comic relief - along with the very good news that "It's Not Your Fault." Ohad's book list on keeping your sanity as a parent

Ohad Ouziel Why Ohad loves this book

This humorously titled book actually takes itself pretty seriously, and contains some solid parenting advice. Like all parenting guides it is to be taken with a grain of salt, but I applaud the light-hearted tone it takes. All too often parenting books make the overwhelming experience of becoming a parent even worth by taking it too seriously, The Baby Owners’ Manual shows the right approach.

Ohad's book list on keeping your sanity as a parent

Ohad Ouziel Why Ohad loves this book

Darth Vader and Son is a collection of very funny comics, depicting the experiences Darth Vader would have had, had he been a more engaged father. Some of the jokes require minimal knowledge of Star Wars lore, but most are just an excellent illustration of how fatherhood can turn you over to the dark-side.
