Why read it?

3 authors picked Yes Please as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I love bad-ass women who take the world by storm. I love it when they’re funny. I love it when they share their journey. Amy Poehler, badass writer/comedian, wrote her memoir in the form of a self-help book. The self-help aspect is in disguise, though. You’re supposed to think it’s a memoir/fun celebrity tell-all, but it’s way more than that. It’s a bossy bitchy blueprint on how to get through life with humor and honesty and loads of funny stories.

Some of her advice: Talk To Yourself Like You’re Ninety and Treat Your Career Like A Bad Boyfriend. Amy’s snarky,…

Reading this, I felt like I was in a room with Poehler and lucky to be there. I dug this so. It’s genuinely funny, historical, and outrageous, with photos. It offers sound life advice and intel on The Business without a heavy hand at name-dropping (but enough to get one salivating).

I appreciate its length, considering she was doing so much when she wrote it, and I do believe she wrote it, unlike so many celeb books. Plus, I adore improvisational comedy, frequently referenced. I won’t spoil anything; I just highly recommend it.

Although I really enjoy celebrity memoirs, I’m surprised by how infrequently friends, particularly more than just one close friend or romantic partner, play an important role in someone’s story. This book was an exception. Unlike most memoirs, it’s not written in a chronological way; instead, you get snippets of Amy Poehler’s life. The audiobook is especially hilarious because Amy Pohler reads it. Throughout the stories, you get a sense of the broader network of friends that support her at different points in her career. Friendships are meaningful and fun in this book.
