Will I love Widdershins?

In this book, we get to watch philologist Percival Endicott Whyborne solve a dark mystery from his past and battle an evil cult in the company of Griffin Flaherty, an ex-Pinkerton turned private detective, and it is delightful.

Widdershins, MA feels like a real place, but also somewhere plucked directly from the pages of H. P. Lovecraft. Whyborne and Griffin’s relationship is sweet and tender. Whyborne’s best friend, Christine Putnam, is a spitfire in the best possible way. The early twentieth century is rendered in loving detail. And there’s a ton of dark humor. What’s not to love?

This book is a little different from most of the horror/supernatural books I read, but so well written that I’ve continued to read the series.

Widdershins is an engaging mix of Lovecraftian Mythos, unlikely heroes, and early 1900s Gothic horror, with a nontraditional romantic twist. In the story, a shy, withdrawn academic teams up with a dashing and heroic Pinkerton agent in Arkham to stop a dark cult from raising an evil sorcerer from the dead. And that’s just book 1!

The whole series is one fun adventure after another. Best suited for fans of super-steamy MM romance.

Widdershins is the first of a whopping eleven books in the Whyborne & Griffin series.  For me, the entire series is like joining a fun—sometimes madcap— romp with an eclectic group of friends.

Set in a magical version of nineteenth-century America replete with mummies, spirits, ancient gods, and Lovecraftian monsters, the story follows shy linguist, Percival Whyborne as the mystery surrounding an ancient artifact throws him together with ex-Pinkerton agent, Griffin Flaherty. The two are polar opposites—one a quiet genius, the other a brash gunman—but their banter and slowly building romance make it obvious that they belong together.
