Why read it?

4 authors picked What Angels Fear as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

This is a fantastic genre fiction book series, and there are 14 or 15 books in this series, but I’ll mention only the first: What Angels Fear. So far, I’ve read the first four books, and I love this series!

It’s set in Regency England around 1811. Sebastian St. Cyr is a Viscount who gets involved in solving murders. I love this series for the superb and rich details she includes in her stories. It brings Regency England to life. Mystery. A touch of romance. History. Adventure. This series has it all!

From Michelle's list on traveling back in time.

Harris plots with an exquisite sense of pacing, never letting up on either dramatic or character arcs.

She also always provides a satisfying resolution, while leaving enough series-level issues for further development. Big, juicy books with conflict on many levels. I particularly admire how season by season and year by year, her plotting material marches with what were current affairs in Regency England, and celebrity gossip of the day. Utterly delightful!

This series is up to eighteen full-length titles (No. 19 What Cannot Be Said, due out in Spring 2024).

This is my personal favorite of the Regency mystery series. The author is a thorough researcher weaving interesting details into her stories without large information dumps, and she is a master at creating relatable characters. Each plot has plenty of twists to keep you turning the pages.

In book one, Sebastian is accused of murdering a young woman and forced to evade the Bow Street Runners in order to prove his innocence. There is a fascinating group of minor characters who reoccur throughout the series. Don’t pass this one by.

From Janet's list on mysteries set in Regency era England.

Set in the same period as my Lavender novels, I can recommend this well-researched Regency mystery series. Sebastian St Cyr, otherwise known as Viscount Devlin, is the sleuth and works alongside a Bow Street magistrate to solve the crimes. These are mostly crimes committed by the upper-classes in Belgravia drawing rooms (and the occasional palace) but this enigmatic and restless hero isn't afraid to put on a disguise and scrap on the filthy streets with the villains. There are nineteen books available in this series – and it’s still going strong. A binge reader's paradise! Enjoy!
