Will I love Washington?

I find Ron Chernow’s biography to be the most informative and comprehensive. It is quite a tome at over 800 pages, but worth the read. Chernow has fascinating insights into his character. Washington had a temper that he sought to control. Even in that, he made an impression on people. From the introduction of the book, “His contemporaries admired him not because he was a plaster saint or an empty uniform but because they sensed his unseen power.”

I love history and this one is jam-packed with the fine details that make George Washington and his circle so much more interesting than the fact sheets in a history class. Chernow managed to put flesh and bones on an icon, making the engagement with this American hero a true encounter with a real man, his gravitas notwithstanding. Length aside, it was an enjoyable read but has also become an invaluable resource for the era.

Ron Chernow hasn’t just written about Hamilton! His biography on George Washington is a masterpiece. Totally relatable. Totally readable. And since the French and Indian War paved the way for the Revolution, this is a perfect link between the two conflicts.
