Warlord is the final book in Cornwell’s Last Kingdom series. Uhtred is an old man now, but there’s still fight in him. As with the rest of the series, characterization is strong throughout.

There are strong themes of friendship and betrayal played out within the historical context of the founding of England. The prose is crisp and succinct, and the battle scenes incomparable. Cornwell never overwrites his action scenes and manages to convey every impact like a real blow to the head.

This is certainly a series I am sad to have completed. It's one of the more enjoyable reads…
