Will I love The Weight of Blood?

An amazing contribution to the horror genre, the book is grounded in US racist culture and you will easily find yourself rooting for the killer.

Maddy is not, and never will be, a bad girl. She's just a scared girl that did some very, very bad things.

That doesn't mean I wasn't cheering her on. Maddy is the kind of heroine that I fantasized about jumping into the pages to fight for. I cussed out many a side-character in my head, just wishing they would try to talk to me like that so I could give them what they deserve.

But Maddy gets her lick back without my help - and it's a remorseless gorefest. The ending of this book is part slasher, part action… show more.

I could not believe how good this retelling of Carrie is.

Like the original, Maddy is the victim of an abusive parent, but in this case, it’s about both race and religion. The added layer is *chef’s kiss*. I loved how it’s both faithful to the original Carrie and entirely its own thing. The author did an amazing job of putting me in Maddy’s head so that I was right there with her as she struggled with how to navigate her life.

In this twist on Stephen King’s Carrie, teenager Madison’s biracial identity makes her a target for her racist classmates as the town prepares for its first integrated prom. Of course, just like in the inspirational novel, Madison has a secret that may mean danger for the rest of her town.
