This is one of my all-time favorite books about “one of the most famous American artists you’ve never heard of.” This picture book explores the world of Walter Anderson, who lived along the Mississippi Gulf Coast and spent his time sailing to an uninhabited island for weeks at a time and painting what he saw—rats, raccoons, rabbits, wild hogs, life, and death.
The language of the book is just as beautiful and evocative as the illustrations.

The Secret World of Walter Anderson is one of my favorite picture book biographies. From the first lyrical lines, Bass draws the reader into another time and place where a solitary Mississippi artist climbs into his leaky skiff and sails off to an uninhabited island to paint the world around him.
