Will I love The Saltwater Heir?

This book is positively overflowing with witty banter. Hilarious witty banter between the love interests who won’t admit they’re madly in love and spectacular witty banter between the various sibling POVs we also get to read. My favorite character besides the FMC and MMC is Finn, a brother of one of the characters whose sense of humor is second to none. His undercover vigilante work, which his family misunderstood as laziness and lack of direction, made me respect and feel for him more, which balances out his apparent inability to take anything seriously well.

I loved the tension throughout this book as I followed a princess, Soren, who was stolen from her family and assumed dead for a decade…until she’s suddenly reunited with them during an intense encounter on the battlefield. 

After being swept back to her family's kingdom, Soren’s lack of family memories brought conflict that kept me turning pages as she sought a cure for her poisoned best friend while her family kept secrets. There’s a scene toward the middle of the book involving a flash of memory that's just beautifully done; I still think about it!

With ever-increasing stakes, The Saltwater Heir is by far the best self-published fantasy book I’ve ever read.

The story follows a lost princess, war-torn kingdoms, and a love interest fated to die. It has the perfect balance of banter and sass, slow-burn romance, hilariously relatable sibling dynamics, and gut-wrenching plot twists to keep you on the edge of your seat. I laughed a lot; I sobbed even more.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy having their hearts captured in an emotional vise of stress, hope, and heartbreak.

Finding The Saltwater Heir and falling in love with its female lead, Princess Soren—who balances softness and strength in equal measure—was something that got me out of a reading slump of many years and changed the way I view female-led fantasy as a whole. This book has all my favorite tropes; sibling banter, friends to lovers, and elemental magic. But best of all, it’s set in the beach-side kingdom of Atlas, and it instantly transports readers. It made me cry several times, and I can’t wait for the sequel! Best of all, Clarke is an independent author with a unique voice and gorgeous prose that has a visceral effect.
