Will I love The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt?

When I read this book as a student, I knew exactly the kind of book I would want to write if I ever got the chance—a book that would bring people of the past to life as Edmund Morris had with T.R. The author first imagined the work as a screenplay, and it shows on every page.

The chapters unfold like scenes in a great, ambitious movie. Roosevelt is set free from his cartoonish reputation and emerges as a complex, brilliant, protean figure, fascinating in each stage of his extraordinary life.

I loved learning that Theodore Roosevelt was the most beloved man in America when he was president. Is there any politician in recent memory we would call beloved?

I liked how he, as a young man, after losing his wife and his mother to illness on the same day, persevered. I liked that he, an aristocrat, went out West to be a man, where he stood his ground and punched a man in a bar, pursued and brought two outlaws to justice, and that as a politician, he kept speaking to a crowd after being shot by a gunman.

No one has ever attacked life with fervor like Theodore Roosevelt, and that caused him to descend into increasing darkness every year after his presidency. Morris spent the better part of his adult life researching and writing about his subject, and he found the core of TR and painted the ultimate work picture of him with a marvelous flair for description.

A landmark of political biography, Morris’s trilogy is epic in scope and length. Among its many strengths is Morris’s ability to match wits with Roosevelt, clearly and compellingly explaining his forays into everything from ranching to antitrust policy to international diplomacy. There is a touch of hagiography here, though not wholly unwarranted.
