Will I love The Lying Life of Adults?

Coming of age, to me, is in part about recognising that the adult world to which you’ve entrusted your childhood is not what it claimed to be: that adults can be fallible, weak, morally culpable, emotionally absent.

Giovanna in The Lying Life of Adults embarks on the same kind of desperate, determined effort to weld her family back together that Scott does in my book. The way she tries to navigate parental failure without letting it crush her is achingly sad at times, but the novel is also loud and raw and full of life.

My aunt was a misunderstood social misfit who rode a bucking bronco bareback and held on for as long as she could. One of the two central characters of this book is just like the woman I remember my aunt being–brash, unapologetic, a little self-destructive, and possessing an unshakeable faith in a humanity that didn’t understand or deserve her.

I wish she wasn’t taken from me. I wish I knew her better. When I read this book, I can feel her spirit. 

I love books about lying! Like a lot of adolescents, Giovanna starts to recognize the lies her parents and their friends are telling and discovers family secrets. The most interesting lies, though, are the ones people tell themselves in order to rewrite their own histories. I love the way Ferrante sets those shifting stories against a girl’s determination to understand her changing face in the mirror and what is really meant by the idea of beauty.

You don’t need me to recommend Ferrante, but I will anyway.

A ferocious story about the pain of leaving childhood behind, Ferrante tells the story of Giovanna, a sheltered only child whose life changes when she overhears her father compare her to his sister Vittoria, from whom he is estranged: “She’s getting the face of Vittoria.”

With that, Giovanna is thrown into an existential crisis that leads her to connect with her mysterious aunt, the dark side of Ferrante’s beloved Naples as well as herself.
