I loved the evoked feelings of love and community, where people support one another despite the odds.

Every time I read a James McBride novel, I am impressed with the scope of his historical research. His characters so epitomize the attitudes and behaviors of their time, race, and place that readers could believe the stories to be true. The intricate manner in which the opening mystery unravels keeps the reader intrigued to the very end.

The intermix of the Jewish community and the Black communities was unusual and captivating. I loved Chona and the way she ran the roost. I also like the characters from the small township. The writing was superb and the characterizations equally as excellent. Highly recommended!

One of my perpetual critiques of American fiction is its hyper-focus on the individual, usually within dysfunctional family systems and always isolated from broader community networks and political systems. Have we lost the capacity to know ourselves in relationship to one another? Artists mirror our world as it is, but we also have a responsibility to imagine our world as it could be. Contemporary novelists could, if we choose, shine the spotlight on our interconnections.
