Why read it?

2 authors picked The Family as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

The best book written about 1960’s Pop-Culture madness and mayhem. As founding member of The Fugs and a unique literary voice, Ed Sanders tells this tale brilliantly. The warning signs, the goosebumps, and knowing when it’s time to stop are all there in The Family.

From Richard's list on music, mayhem, drugs, and sex.

There have been plenty of books on counterculture Hollywood’s most impactful and arguably most famous figure, Charles Manson—plenty of films, too. For my money, the best book is one of the first, written by the former rock musician and antiwar activist Ed Sanders. Without the benefit of hindsight, the book captures the moment—that fateful summer of 1969—perfectly and poetically.

From Jon's list on 1960s Hollywood.
