Why read it?

5 authors picked The Eyes and the Impossible as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

In a busy park, the animal population has a lively society governed by bison and patrolled by our protagonist, who may or may not be a dog. Their collective adventures are fresh, fun, and full of surprise. I'm amazed at how Dave Eggers managed to reimagine an old kids' literature standby, talking animals, in such a respectful way. They even have theological conversations! And hats off to him for not dumbing down his vocabulary for younger readers. The language throughout is marvelous. This is one of the best kids' books I've read in ages.

Such a different book, but so kind. A feel good book.

I was completely taken in by the unexpected narrator, the character development, and the perfect voice for this unique story. I didn't want it to end!

Lake Song by Lesley Pratt Bannatyne,

Selected by Deesha Philyaw as winner of the AWP Grace Paley Prize in Short Fiction, Lake Song is set in the fictional town of Kinder Falls in New York’s Finger Lakes region. This novel in stories spans decades to plumb the complexities, violence, and compassion of small-town life as the…

This book is special, y’all. The main character is a dog named Johannes, but his friends mostly refer to him as the Eyes. The Eyes can run fast, and he’s smart and caring. His friends include seagulls, goats, bison, horses, and (much to Johannes’s chagrin) ducks.

The writing in this story is spare and beautiful; some of my favorite lines include, “I’m so angry at my mind” and “Bite for justice. It had a certain ring.” The version I read had a carved wooden cover (seriously – gorgeous!) and included several full-color illustrations and gold-gilded pages.

This book won the…

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but that’s exactly what I did when I saw the deluxe wood-bound edition of The Eyes and The Impossible; warm and inviting and hinting at untold adventure.

The first thing to love is the central character Johannes, a self-proclaimed very fast dog who is caring and brave and very often funny as he describes the world he lives in (a park) and his friends (a gull, a squirrel, a raccoon, and more).

The story begins with a seemingly mundane but full life that transforms into a time of unknown dangers…
