All of Higashino’s books are great, but this is one of the best, and it happens to be the first novel in the Detective Galileo series, where a physics professor helps a detective solve crimes. Imagine Sherlock Holmes, except set on the streets of Tokyo. We follow Detective Kusanagi of the Tokyo Police as he tries to piece together the mysterious events surrounding a murder where we, the reader, already know who committed the crime.

The format is so very different from your normal crime novel, and that is one of the truly interesting things about this book. It’s…

I am inspired by books that unlayer other and more complex societies, and this one is high on my favorites list. Higashino is strong on what drives people and their actions, in this case, a mother and daughter, their estranged and bullying husband/father, a secret next-door admirer, and the cops assigned to solve the father’s death.

And in so doing it is a wonderful revelation about the nuances in and of Japanese life and culture. Again, Tokyo or a specific section of that marvellous city becomes as much a character as all the others, so the book becomes for me…

What I liked most about this book was the cat-and-mouse game between the two main characters, who are both geniuses and friends.

One is the murderer doing everything he can to derail the investigation, and the other is the lead investigator. The interactions between the two characters are brilliant, and the author's delving deep into the psyches of both of them is incredibly well done.
