Will I love The Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe?

An exciting and mysterious author illustrating a particular period of American literary history. The composer musically interpreted Poe’s times and personality in a major symphonic work.

McKay composed several dark and dramatic pieces during his career, including an arrangement of March to the Scaffold from a classical piece and an original work called To Bury the Dead for an anti-war stage play.

Poe's short stories The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, and The Cask of Amontillado greatly influenced me when I was young. While my peers were reading The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries, I was engrossed in the beautiful and twisted world of Poe.

Although it is questionable if there are any supernatural abilities exhibited in these tales, I found that the common theme of concealing a crime within household structures like floorboards or a wall inflicted a psychological trauma on me that I never completely recovered from.

Whenever I hear or read almost any of Poe's stories, his mastery of musicality and rhythm never fails to mesmerize and delight. 

His poems and prose capture the human psyche so acutely and meld genres so astutely. In editing my father's work and in my own writing, I've made a conscious effort to not confine storylines to one genre, mood or feeling. Doing so requires finesse with narrative tension, a skill Poe perfected.

Revisit some of his masterpieces in this collection, perhaps paired with something lighter to counterbalance his darkness.
