Why read it?

6 authors picked The Coming Wave as one of their favorite books. Why do they recommend it?

I found this book incredibly powerful because it comes from a true "insider" who helped build the very technology he’s now warning us about.

I love the honesty in his voice; he doesn't sugarcoat how fast this "wave" of change is coming. It made me feel a sense of urgency, but also a sense of responsibility to stay informed. I appreciated that he looked beyond just the "cool gadgets" and talked about how AI will change governments and global power.

It’s a sobering read, but I found it essential for understanding the sheer scale of the transformation we are all…

Mustafa’s Suleyman’s book is both informative and a little frightening. AI (Artificial Intelligence) has been part of our lives for years, and technical advances have accelerated its recent evolution. Suleyman offers an informative overview of AI’s major fields before getting to the big questions: Is the US doing enough to lead this technology? How many jobs will AI replace? Do we need safeguards to contain it and can it be contained?

These are questions many of us struggle with, but Suleyman articulates them with insight and authority, adding a valuable point of view. Is he right? We’ll see. Has he…

This book is the tsunami of technological advancements (primarily AI) that will bring with it the perils and opportunities that will determine the future of humanity.

Of all the books that alert the world to the unintended destructive consequences of revolutionary technologies, this one is the best in that Suleyman’s writing style grips the reader’s interest, despite the terrifying subject matter that would normally drive readers away. Suleyman is at the cutting edge of AI development, so he knows they are all playing with fire and can blow up the world.

While Mustafa and I didn’t work together at DeepMind, I believe Suleyman’s book has become a seminal read for anyone interested in the future of AI. Suleyman highlights the central dilemma of whether to embrace AI for all its potential benefits or to fight it tooth and nail to keep humanity safe.

From Steve's list on feed your curiosity on AI.

This book left me breathless! As someone who's always dreamed about the future, reading an insider's take on AI felt like getting a backstage pass to tomorrow. I literally gasped out loud when Suleyman revealed how synthetic biology and AI are converging.

This book kept me up for three straight nights, and I've filled it with so many sticky notes it looks like a paper porcupine!

From Andrea's list on the future of artificial intelligence.

I loved this book because it is written by one of the foremost experts in AI, so I know I can trust the accuracy of the book’s technical aspects. Although written for a general audience so anyone can read it, the book nevertheless has a great deal of useful insights for engineers working in technology.

It clearly covers the critically important ramifications of today’s extremely rapid technical advancements being made, including safety and the alignment of an Artificial General Intelligence’s goals with those of humanity. It also comes with a clear set of definitions.

From Donald's list on future world of ai and robots.
