Will I love Start With Why?

This book has been a go-to for years, as I really appreciate Simon’s guidance to ALWAYS clarify the mission and purpose of any organization before digging deeper into the strategies and action plans to advance the mission.

All too often, my bias for action had driven me to jump into the work of creation and delivery. If every single player on the field with me wasn’t 100% bought into the game we were playing, why we were there, and where we wanted to be in the future, we wasted precious time and resources.

This amazing book helped me reconnect with my purpose at a tough time when I had started going through the motions. I was running businesses, leading teams, and giving all my time to others, but this book made me pause and ask: “Why am I really doing this?”. I loved it because it made me think. It made me think about what is most important in my life. What is my why. It helped me to prioritise work and things around my values.

In my view, this book is a game-changer. Sinek probably agrees, given that it became a bestseller and has seen him become one of the most influential thinkers on leadership of our time. The Golden Circle—Why, How, What—at the heart of the book flips conventional leadership thinking on its head, getting clear on purpose (the why) rather than starting with the what. 

I love the way Sinek brings his thinking and the power of purpose to life with real-world examples, from the Wright brothers, the ‘founders of powered flight,’ through Martin Luther King Jr. to Jobs and Apple.

My journey with Simon Sinek's Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action began during my tenure at Massachusetts General Hospital, where I was tasked with the integration of two research labs.

As I grappled with unifying two distinct cultures, I grabbed with motivating and integrating two distinct teams. For a good reason, Simon Sinek’s book and associated TED Talk had tens of millions of views.

I loved his book because he set out to inspire people to find a purpose at work. He explains the value of asking why to create innovative organizations where customers and employees feel loyalty.

Sinek’s work made me want to research what inhibits our sense of asking why, which is critical because if you do not know what hinders you, it is far more difficult to overcome those issues.

Through his TED talk and Start With Why, Simon Sinek created a “purpose” movement around the globe that spanned people and business.

Although most of the buzz around Sinek’s model has been about “finding your why,” The Golden Circle includes more than this. The three layers of why (purpose) that sit at its core are followed by how (actions) and what (results of actions). 

Using well-known leaders and companies as examples, this book illustrates a pathway for growth that applies both to individuals and to corporations.

One of the most common pain points faced by people looking to start a side hustle is not knowing what one to choose. While Start with Why is largely looked at as a leadership book, I found it to be pivotal in picking my side hustle. This book shows you how to find your “why,” or your purpose. By figuring this out, you can tie this back in with your side hustle to do something that really matters. This will help you to stick it out when the times get tough. 

As my journey in personal growth continued, there came a time when I realised that the hard physical, practical approach was just one area I had to master if I was to steer my life to the heights I dreamed for myself.

This is when I thought about meaning and the more intangible areas of success, such as motivation, desire, deeply held beliefs, and limiting thoughts.

It is easy to stumble into the strange and esoteric within this area of literature, therefore I cannot recommend Simon Sinek’s book highly enough.
